Good advice sequentialshift.
I went for an hour long test ride, (in my leathers and Daytona boots ) this evening to see what I thought of the three speed hub. All my worries were unfounded really, it's fine for what I want, in fact after test riding a load of conventional multi-geared bikes this was by far the easiest and simplest and I couldn't really feel any disadvantage of having only three gears.
Best thing is that you're not constantly fiddling to find the 'optimum' gear. You can also stop in top gear, 'cos of a sudden red light or nob-head car driver, and then change to first whilst stopped. Huge advantage. Also looks more stripped back and will be less maintenance.
So I bought it and am now the proud owner of the fourth best stealth vehicle in the world, after my own SD, the Lockheed F-117, and the Christian Bale's version of the Batmobile.
