used one of these on the street? I know dirt guys use them, but this one is supposed to be for the street.

Seems like it would be a pain in the ass but, since I have trouble keeping my stopping distance shorter than my sight distance, I'm always looking to improve my odds.

I've also been looking at these, but expensive: http://www.rs-taichi.com/main/leather/T-RAPS.html

Any thoughts gratefully received.

Most the racers in the Dakar (this year) wore them - KTM recommends them, as ALL the factory KTM riders wore them. Too many racers have either died or been injured by neck/spine injuries that the Leatt brace could have prevented/minimized. I dunno about road riding - how often do you crash?
But for off-road, where the edge is always much closer (on purpose) than on the street, I would definitely wear it.
Acerbis makes a jacket that is designed to integrate the Leatt into it.

I plan on wearing this combo riding the TAT this summer.

From the Leatt site:

"Can I use a Leatt-Brace(R) for road racing?
Yes you may. If you are a track day rider of reasonable ability or a commuting motorcyclist the Leatt-Braceā„¢ MOTO GPX will serve you well. If you are at an expert track day or professional racing level you will find that you may need adjust your riding style a little."

That says to me if you lay on the tank and look far through the turn it will interfere with your body position. Many track day riders never achieve this body position so probably won't experience any interference. It would probably work well with the SD riding position. If it doesn't you can always use it to potty train your kid. That being said I will have one this season for dirt riding/racing. And that being said I plan on having a kid in the next year too. As far as I'm concerned I'm covered. How many kids learn to poo through a carbon fiber toilet ring?

cjc kudos for looking in to it. It has nothing to do with riding skill, being a chicken shit or anything else except preparing for the inevitable, a crash. It's no different than inquiring about and wearing a helmet. You can crash 1000 times. You may break your neck on 1 or 1000, you don't get to chose.
