Boxing Day

As I am sitting here looking at my calender I see Dec. 26 is boxing day in Aust, Can, NZ, and the UK. My question is what is this day marked for and why is it called boxing day?

A quick Wiki search returned that it used to be for giving gifts to the less fortunate, but has recently turned more into an after christmas shopping day. Which would relate it to what in the US is called Black Friday (the friday after thanksgiving- (the day we broke free from those british bastards ))

In Canada it term "boxing" came from when you wanted to return that stupid cardigan your aunt gave you, and turn it into beer, and the freek behind the till wouldn't give you your $ back without a sales slip. So you did what any Canadian would do for a case of beer.....BOXED HIS FOOKIN EARS OFF!

Observed by Commonwealth of Nations
Type British Commonwealth countries
Date 26 December
Related to St. Stephen's Day

Boxing Day is a public holiday in the United Kingdom, Canada, New Zealand, Australia, and countries in the Commonwealth of Nations with a mainly Christian population. It is based on the tradition of giving gifts to the less fortunate members of society. Contemporary Boxing Day in many countries is now a "shopping holiday" associated with after-Christmas sales.

BAH HUMBUG the commercializing of all of these stinking holidays only cost me the equivalent of a new SDR....

corporate greed and the nursery rhyme fairy tail that most live in. excluding one small...

I think Boxing day is a corruption of the old English name.

The day was originally Bolloxing day, as in "Will you tell your bolloxing family to go home, they are doing my bollox in."

Or maybe that is just in our house
