Broadband speeds

Right bit of advice as im not the most teccy and cant find the answer on google (probably because im not asking the right question).

My internet speed is shite tested again today:

Download speed 0.7mb
Upload speed 0.4mb

I am on BT 5mb deal (cheap as with phone line), as BT said it was pointless getting more I think, but since being at this house net is really slow and Youtube vids take an age to watch as they keep stopping.

My question is, if I went for some mega fast broad band (what I used to have) like 17mb would I get any more broadband speed to my computer or will the crappy cablng to my house only allow so much ie 1 mb? so pointless?

Get BT to test your line if they haven't already done so. The quality of the line and distance from the exchange are what will dictate your speeds. .7mb is truly rubbish though. Cable not an option there?

Also is that your speed via a wireless router, try direct from your modem/router and not via wifi. If you get a faster speed that way you need to optimise your wifi.

If you pay 5mb I would want at least 3,5/4mb ( trough cable, not wifi because wireless is always slower)

I have 50mb cable deal and here's the test at the office ( near 40meters of cable away from modem/router )

When I spoke to BT initially they said the most I could get was 1mb? (a fair distance from the exchange) and the line test was less than 1mb? the line is old and is apparantly getting replaced but still wont be that great.

So if I got more broadband speed would the internet be quicker or am I limited by the distance from the exchange?

Ah sounds like you are screwed then buddy 1mb is a disgraceful speed in this day and age, even when living in the sticks. Can't see what else you can do with Virgin not being in the area. No point paying for a higher speed as 1mb is as fast as it's going to get until BT upgrade the lines.

1.98 mb is the best in my area hold of the gopro HD would tke an age to upload a youtube vid.

Stick your phone number into www.bt.com/infinity and see if they're rolling out cable networks in your area, it'll also tell you the best you can hope to get out of them currently

Just tried that TJ Maybe I should get the pikeys to steal the cable like they usually do so i can get it replaced!
