I'm looking to get the GoPRO HD cam - looks like awesome quality video and not bad price. Apparently if you go to their website and fill in the order form but don't progress to payment they'll send you an email offering 10% off!

There are so many good usable camera's at the moment, it's difficult to say what's the best for you.
Buy what can be interesting is to find one with a large optical zoom factor and with stabilizer. It should also be quick when you push the button.
Remember that all the compact camera's make bad pics with lack of light; the diaphragm is too small and the sensor makes a lot of noise because it's also too small. But a body with good lenses is larger and much heavier.
You can read in depth reviews here: http://www.dpreview.com/
I use this compact camera now and it makes reasonable pics and films, see the test:

Good luck!

I thoroughly recommend a Panasonic Lumix. I have the old TZ3, which has been superseded now. The TZ10 is now the top one.

They have a very good Leica lens, a large lcd screen and 10x optical zoom.

If you're not fussed about having the latest model, you should be able to pick up one of the older versions for a bargain price.

Edit - Here's the middle version, it's got an even better zoom.

I had to buy one of the larger slr style cameras to get quick shutter and focus speeds as well as full size sequential shots for sports type pics.

It's not a real SLR it's just an electronic viewfinder, their aimed towards average joes like you or I who want better pictures and functions but don't know what we're doing

My first one was a Fuji S5000 and it was brilliant for my purposes, I've since bought an S8000 but I've not been happy with it since I had it, although it seems clear now that there is definitely something wrong with it so it's just waiting to be put in a box and sent back to Fuji for repair or replacement right now and then hopefully it will be at least as good as my old S5000 was.

Not really what you're after as doesn't really fit in a pocket but not sure if there are many small ones out there that come with that kind of functionality.

Or do what agent orange said, screw the camera and just film it in HD instead, you can always pull a frame from the video to use as a picture

Panasonic LX3 for a moderate budget.

Canon S80 if you have decent money.

Both high quality P&S cameras that are highly reviewed and liked.
