First day back at a computer, since my buddy bought his GSR600 on Wednesday.
Decided to take him through a nearby set of curves on the way home, to get used to the bike. Guess what. He saw some gravel on the edge of the road, got a fright, stood the bike up and locked the front brake, at around 50kph. Pretty sure a case of target fixation, damn. Sitting watching him in the mirrors, I saw it all happen.
So he dropped the bike on it's right side, which slid into a ditch. He's fine, but will listen next time I suggest spending a bit more on gloves, since his tore and he's got some tasty palms at the moment. Otherwise, some roasties, bruised knee but he's in good nick.
Bike on the other hand.
Right fork leg bent;
Headlight unit, tank, frame, side covers, seat unit all damaged and scratched. Well, the frame is just scratched.
Althernator and engine cover also scratched, with the alternator cover (I think) holed and leaking.
And obviously the footpegs (I include passenger), mirror, lever and bar end are... bin-worthy.
All in all, he and the bike slid for about 10 metres.
I'm gutted. I mean, I'm thinking that I should never have taken him onto that road. But then my other buddies tell me that if he can't turn a bike around a gentle curve at 50kph, he can't ride at all and would've dropped it at any point. And yes, he's ridden 'big' bikes before, albeit 8 years ago.
Still gutted, last time I ever suggest or encourage someone to get or ride a bike. If they want to, go for it, but I'm sure as hell never going to encourage it.
It really sucks seeing your good friend slide into a ditch.
