In California we have the ability to lane share. It is indispensable in bumper to bumper traffic. The law is written in such a way that forms a judgement on an authority as to wether or not it is deemed reckless. If you were coming up to a car that was making a left hand turn at an intersection and there was room for you to filter through, even though it was a single lane road, you could use the free space to ride through. This is what is known as lane sharing. The same holds true for a vehicle turning off to the right. Basicly If there is room for more than one vehicle in a single lane circumstance, that lane can be shared. Since a motorcycle is narrow enough to create this equation with relative ease, the law regards the sharing as already written into regular driving conditions. We do not per-se have special dispensation about this matter. I was eighteen with an outstanding warrant and I hooliganed up to a stop sign on my RD350, slammed on the brakes, came to a complete stop and took off without putting my feet down. This was followed by a ticket with the officer stating that both feet must touch the ground to make it a complete stop. I was then escorted to the police station to pay my $65.00 warrant for bald tyres on my 64 Chevy Impala.
I rarely take advantage of filtering in a city as I think it is rude behavior. Get me on a freeway and I'll custom pinstripe your too close for comfort Lexus with my aluminium panniers
Good luck with the legislation.
