New cellphone

I'm planning on getting myself a snazzy new phone in a few months, to upgrade from the ancient Nokia 3310 I've had for a few years. I can then stop borrowing Smurfette's when I want to listen to music or take a photo... I'm pretty slow when it comes to new phone's though, so advice needed.

What I'm looking for:
Lots of storage for mp3's, at least 2gig (internal or microSD, either's good)
Video capture and playback would be nice too
Great quality audio (speakers and earphones)
Large screen
Bluetooth, sms/mms, and all the other taken-for-granted tech of the past 3 years that I haven't had ...

I've looked at the Iphone, Nokia 5800, Nokia N85/95/96..... and that's about it.
What's the best bet out of those, and possible suggestions???

Oh, and some sites say the iPhone doesn't actually have mms, and others say it does, any clarity here (that functionality is quite important to me)...

I had a N95 it was sh*t.

Too many gadgets meant it was had to do simple things like texting and answering calls.

The sh*test battery life I have had since 1988 when I had a Nokia the size of a housebrick.

Software glitches on a daily basis, I am sure N96 or later N95 (8gb?) would be better in this respect.

My problem is I use a cellphone a lot, 15 - 18 hours per month, but as a phone. I dont need cameras or MP3's or internet or WAP. I dont understand any of them and they detract from usability and battery life.

Because I spend so much the networks are aways keen to give me the latest and greatest and all I really want is a tough phone with good battery life and no gimmicks.

Only good thing about N95 was I got it for nothing and sold it 18 months later for 120 quid to one of these recycling websites.

I love my iPhone. I didn't think I'd get on with it as well as I do. It doesn't come with MMS, but O2 in UK has got a website where you can see MMS' sent to you. You can download an app that allows you to, at least, send MMS. However, I don't miss MMS as I can as well send emails with pictures. The data is free (read; included).
I was also afraid of the paltry camera, but despite the low megapixels, the pictures come out better than I thought. Another thing I was worried about was the lack of physcial buttons, but the on-screen keyboard is very clever and is designed to correct your mis-taps. Works fairly well.
If you push the technology to its max it'll drain the power of it, but I've had smartphones that have emptied batteries quicker.
Naturally the iPod part is as good as any other iPod if not better due to the screen.
I don't like using iTunes to sync it, but I can live with it.
The web browser is absolutely divine, the user interface works really well (unlike anything else on the market).

It's not perfect, but what it does, it does really well. Worst part is that you're going to have to live with being an iPhone owner.

I use an original iPhone. its perfect for me. NO MMS, NO video (unless you hack it and get an unofficial app -I've done this and it works)

The idea with the iPhone is you dont need MMS cos you just email it instead...!!! At least with the 3G one you've got fastish webs speeds over the network, with the old one I have to be in a WIFI spot to use internet, and even then I would use my personal email cos it's not secure.

The iPhone is the best phone out there - FOR ME- but it aint perfect. The camera is not great at all! But is an awesome ipod of course!! and the screen and video/image manipulation rocks!!

for me its 5 toys in 1; phone/mobile computer/diary/camera/ipod. if I played game on it it'd be more than that!

Be aware though, Apple products are often like a walled garden, its nice inside but you cant get out....and if you manage it then you are totally on your own. If you like itunes and apple stuff then go for it!

I wish I had a iPhone 3G but I dont wanna spend the dosh on a massive contract, mine is hacked and I'm on Orange PAYG.

Thanks for the review, TB - I'll check out the Saga (I'm a Mac abuser but currently locked into a BBerry Curve [which I don't hate at all], always looking for a better mousetrap).

no one is poop to brother Joe, he is tolerant and peaceful.... really folks, some of my bricks and morter brethren are calling me gay cos I like to type away on this internet,

I look at these ear to mouth phones, they have this eccentric flavor to them, i could easily imagine to add a feminine voice or a husky one on the girl and say it is gay,

to speak on a cell all the time may seem gay to some or using the atm all the time may seem gay, to a man.... gay is the feminine side of his genetic make up.

to have doubts of ones sexual preferences is somewhat soft to me, softness is for women, this is why men have peckers that get hard.

Men should be well planted in thare sexual preference, shizzle is real and roots are planted deep here.

In a shell, the world has become confused, but this cat is not. "laissez-faire" my friends.

Smurfette and I had a good test-fiddle with the iPhone today, and it felt, looks and sounded fantastic. We're almosts willing to forgive it's lack of mms and video camera!

But.

All the pc's we use operate on ms windows - So can you connect the iPhone to it via usb and be able to transfer data (pics, mp3's ect)? If not, that's an automatic disqualification...
