hi all
gs 1000 ,yam rd's....
having flash backs of scary moments when i was young .. 1960 born .. so ya all youngsters and i is a old git riding a crazy ktm ... ha ,can remember my first eddie lawson 1000.then onto a gsx 1100 .. then on the 1100 gsxr d redg.... those were the days . its now a wonder how i survived all the mad moments and got to 52 without being wiped out . although had a neck fracture at 25 on a honda 500 cr. one broke toe, foot came off the peg doing a stand up wheelie on a bultaco pursang. two broke ribs ,handlebars on a yamaha dt 400. torn scrotum on a aprilia rsv 6 years back , bloody double bubble as i went flying over front.. no skin on forearm and elbow , sleeve up up . calmed down a bit now .
sadly now still a child but just older .

Ha Old farts indeed! I'd like to reclassify that as The True Believers. None of this boy wonder stuff - Here today,
gone tomorrow (or over the next 20 years). Gone like ghosts mumbling about family responsibilities, wife,
mortgage, kids, size of virtual (digital) penis Etc.

The True Believers managed to do all that stuff and still retained the desire/ability to rip it up.

Personally, I'd be proud to be the oldest member of this forum because being the oldest hooligan would be a badge
of honour.

I don't have any old pics. My long dead uncle likely had some old Polaroids (the really old ones that you had to smear with the stick of goo to help develop them) of me on a Honda 50 and later a Honda 70 at the ripe old age of 8 in 1972. That's when I started crashing bikes. I didn't like riding much back then because the only way I found I could stop was to crash. My stubby legs couldn't touch the ground back then either.

huh i could not get a girlfriend to go on my bikes , they used to ask if i had a car and when i said now , that was it .gone ..
some of them i did not say i had a car as well as i did not want to be seen with them anyway. some of the girls back then were so big that ya would think that you were ridin a chopper with them on the back .. haaaaaaaaaaaa.
they knew that they had a fat ass because when they pulled there knickers down ,their ass was still in them yuk

Speed Hill Climbing in the '80's. Supermoto bikes before supermoto was invented!! 1981 KX250 with 18" Akront rims, wet tyre in the front & wet compound inter on rear. Bike put me in hospital for 3 months with a smashed knee joint, bike sufferred a scratched clutch lever!

Later replaced with a CR500 set up with 18" wheels, Dunlop KR124s and 300mm disc - made the SD look sane.

1981, after 4 bans a couple of motorcross bikes and a broken back I was back on the RDs.....

Drag racing now, my first road legal drag bike, started life as a 79 RD250E completely rebuilt with a big bore to 270cc using 125LC pistons and wild porting, shortened Allspeed pipes, XS400 swing arm 45mm longer than the RD arm with 50mm longer GS750 Marzochi shocks,

Later fitted with a Denco (USA) ported big reed RD350B top end, that was then bored to 370cc using YPVS350 +2mm pistons

Image

Finally fitted with the engine from this one......

Image

79 RD400E, first big bore RD400, the actual capacity was 427cc using IT175 pistons, hybrid crank TZ750 mains, RM125 big ends, Kawasaki small ends (forgot the model) Straight cut primary gears, YZ490 clutch with TZ750 springs, YPVS modified reed blocks / rubbers bored to take a pair of TZ750 34mm Mikunis, modified Allspeed pipes,XS400 swing arm again and 50mm longer S&W shocks......
A monster of a bike, mid 12 second 1/4 miles, fierce power wheelies in 3rd gear, topped out at almost 130mph on road gearing,
But them IT pistons didnt like to be revved too high, pushing 9500rpm the skirts would crack and the top ring would break up

Oh and I had this mint 80 RD400F stock looking sleeper with a Proddy spec tune for fooking around on and blowing off the LC boys

Image

I loved those red and white RD400Fs Wanted one so bad. But then I got the Kawa triple and was happy I guess. But seeing your picture made me remember the total infatuation I had with the RD. I never fell for the LC really. I thought it was a bit lightweight and gay!! It was a bit pretty. The RD was the business.

TLS_Russ

The old RD air cooled vs LC rivalry 30 years later.........
both had their faults which is why the cult of modifying them developed and is still going, even the RD tuners were rivals, Terry Shepperd / Stan Stephens and a few lesser known ones, same thing in the USA

Terry Shepperd went onto tuning V Twins and did a lot with the Suzuki TLs, he also did a frame conversion....

my TLs is my RD400/Rd350LC/H1/H2, it has some of the character of all of them, my SD must be the YPVS/RG then
Lowrance

Lowrance

Amazing the number of RDs (2 strokes in general) in this thread. Funny how we all migrated to the SD.

I started my hooliganism career on a 1979 RD400 Daytona Special! That bike got me in a shit load of trouble!

Bummed I don't have a pic to throw up...
bic_bicknell

bic_bicknell

I can only say what I remember thinking of them then! Anyway, it was more of a comment on their looks. I was so used to the very straight lines and rectangular, solid styling of the old RD bikes and then along came this new lightweight bike with it's curves and delicate parts. Everything on it was a smaller, lighter, curvy, sculpted. Parked next to the old RD's it looked very feminine and not as macho. It was only it's performance that saved it from being tatally gay But of course styling fashions and tastes change and within a year or so the old RD's looked like things out of the ark.

What I really, really envied was the monoshock though.
bic_bicknell

bic_bicknell

Here's some pictures of the next seminal bike that entered the scene about the same time as the LC. My mate Robert's Katana seemed like something out of a science fiction movie. But then again it was just a GSX1000 underneath and didn't do anything better than the older bikes really.

Your RS250 was exactly the same as my first bike, waaaayyy too temperamental for me who only just passed their test. Mine was a 96N bought in 2000.

Beautiful bike and lovely to ride (when it worked ) Brought back some memories for me, don't think that a 17st rider and an rs250 mixed too well.

I liked the KR even with its missing in the rain but then I sold it and got a RG500 Now that was a beast for its time. It had a few problems also like the belly pan cracked on both sides from fuel dripping out of the over flow pipes straight onto the plastic pan and the fix was a new belly pan with a hole put in each side for the hoses to poke through. Also the top fairing needed a bit more support to stop the screen from flexing it use to move around a bit at high speed.
The other problem with mine was that one of the top expansion chambers was slightly rubbing on the tyre so I packed it out with some washers.
The main problem was that it loved fuel. But I used to love that thing I just wish Suzuki would build one today with all the new technology it would be one hell of a machine.
scamb66

scamb66

Think the only problem I had with the KR was the rear plug falling out once, was considerably younger then and not to bright when it came to bike maintenance. A mate used to score avgas from under the wheel well of a Caribou aircraft in my old RAAF days, running on that managed to eke 195 kmh (probably optimistic) but sure felt faster. Smoke used to pour out the cans for a while after I stopped. Would love to have another one, cant recall the last time I saw one or it newer KR-1S. But an RG500 is high on my list.

The last RD400 I built to compete the Supebike magazine Ultimate streetbike competitions, 1980 RD400F 424cc, spent more building this thing than it would have cost to buy a brand new RD500LC............

78-81bhp @9600 rpm would and rev out to 10,500 still making around 70bhp, low 11 second 1/4 miles and road legal

Seen here at my last track day in 2005 at Rockingham with my old Sprinter parked behind and no it was far from being the slowest bike out there that day

bic_bicknell

bic_bicknell

My first road bike was a lot more humble. I learned a lot from this bike, from setting valves and contact breakers, maintenance routines, riding through all the year weather etc. I crashed it so many times that I was always fixing it and straightening bits out. I also resprayed it about ten times in two years. As soon as I passed my test I got the RD and never thought about this bike again. But it was a good little bike really. Note the helmet - a Stadium Achilles - my dad bought it for me, it was totally uncool and dorky, everyone else had AGVs. I also had my dad's old Belstaff waxed jacket which was also not cool at the time really. Would be worth a fortune now on ebay.
