What could possibly go wrong?
Things that went well – The bike ran OK all day and went home in one piece, the sun showed up and I had a good time.
Things that didn’t – I had the gopro on single shot and not video mode so didn’t film the race (just one picture of the start) I was much much slower than I used to be, my left arm went numb after a lap so I couldn’t pull the clutch in and had to stop till some feeling and function returned. I crashed twice and I’m not sure the bike was as crisp as a 300 two stroke should be. (Long time since I ran a two stroke)
If there are some pictures in this post it means that I have sussed out the dropbox link system which seems hard to fathom at the moment. Apologies if nothing shows up. I do have some video from later practice laps including the two crashes and will post these up when I figure out how after a bit of editing.
What did I learn?
Entering the race was a mistake. There were log jumps, tyre obstacles etc and getting cleanly through this stuff at any pace takes practice. All the easy routes were closed for the race so it was properly in at the deep end and I spent all my time trying not to get in the way of the proper racers.
My left arm is weak and I have residual nerve damage from the accident last year so I’m going to need to work on that. My overall fitness is better than I thought but will need work before I can outlast the fuel range.
This off road stuff is a great laugh and I’m going to do a few more events and some long trails this year. Hope a few of you SD nuts who like to get dirty can join me some time.
