Hi Stumpy
I have Gilles on my fireblade. I had to buy longer throttle cables and longer Goodrich brake and clutch lines to fit them. So dont think the cost ends with the purchase price.
They are good for track without risers as you can change handlebar angles. Trouble is to get a comfortable position for road riding you need the 60mm risers, On the fireblade, and, I should imagine, GSXR also. You cannot rotate risers all the way to top position as the brake fluid reservoir fouls on the top fairing. This doesnt really matter as the bars are still higher and slightly closer to you. Harris do a kit to move reservoirs to centre of top yolks but more money still!
You also lose quite a bit of lock with the risers on which doesnt matter on track but might on the road.
The Gilles are very well made and look bling, lots of people notice them.
Dont buy them in the UK though as they are having your pants down. Look on US websites and you will get them for $300 (half UK money).
I bought mine 2nd hand off Ebay for about £150. the trick here is to find out your fork diameter, in Haynes manual. My variobars came off Gixxer750, same 43 mm forks. They are an improvement. Especially when I carry a tank bag abroad but I doubt I would go through the modification again for the limited benefit.
I did a trackday at Brands on Monday with risers fitted - no problems. My regular track bike is a GSXR750K3. I have Harris clipons on this with are longer and better angled but no higher than stock. So no real benefit for the road.
Your other alternative bars and raised yolks are more effective on the road but in my opinion uglier. I know one of Rapid's instructors had them on his R1 and he had to cut away parts of his top fairing with a Dremmel to stop the bars fouling at moderate lock. Again you will need new brake and clutch lines and likely have to relocate reservoirs.
If you go the Gilles route, I have Suzuki longer throttle cables that MIGHT fit your bike. You are welcome to them them if they do. Hope that helps.
