I had a Husky 610SM as my first bike. Was the easiest, most fun bike to ride. Also I think in CA right now high blue book on a mint one is $6k so you can get one for under if you look. That's for an '08.

There are far fewer real SuMo's available here in the US than in Europe pretty much the 610SM the DR-Z or the KTM. The KTM was too expensive for me then. The choice on the DR-ZSM came down to this comparison.

Husky 6sp - DRZ 5sp
Husky FI - DRZ -carb (yes for all around use I want FI)
Husky 577cc - DRZ 399cc
Husky 55hp - DRZ 33hp
Husky 312lbs - DRZ 321lbs
Husky Brembos w/ss lines - DRZ parts bin
Husky new was $7600 - DRZ new was $6900

That plus the fact that the DRZ while being a great bike is for all intents and purposes discontinued. They are just clearing out old stock before bringing in an all new bike with significant upgrades (FI,6sp,more cc, etc)
Just my .02, YMMV. I put over 2k miles on it in a month with no issues on some brutal roads. Not sure on how hard it is to get parts.

If you haven't already checked it out, this is the place to go...

For street tards I'd go with a Husky SM610, KTM 690 (if you can find one in your price range), or KTM 625. The 625's are a little buzzier than the 690s but still good bikes. I had a Husky SM 610 and it was loads of fun on the right roads. It seemed to be a little smoother than my buddies KTM Duke II but neither was unbearable. It took me a little while to get the hang of riding it fast, but once I did it felt like I was riding faster at a more comfortable pace if that makes sense. I'm looking at picking up a lightly used 690 (SMC most likely but possibly a Duke 3) if I can find one at the right price.

I don't like the Suzuki DRZ 400 SM since it's pretty gutless compared to the Husky's or KTM's. On the other hand they are bullet proof.

Good luck on whatever you choose and have fun.

Yeah the DRZ is always a good buy, never have ridden one and alot of people say I'm going to be disappointed with the performance. It does win out on the use-ability though.

When it comes down to it I have a Superduke and we all know it has plenty of guts, I just want a really light and rugged bike to toss around downtown and some rough & tight twisites sometimes, if I take to it I will upgrade then but I think the DRZ might be the best bet, maybe 1500 extra for some performance mods.

Not the most exciting but I think it will do what I need, the only other is that Aprilia SVX because the friend might want to unload it and cheap, we'll see anyone know a good price on a good condition SVX? 2007 I think

If you do decide on the DRZ SM, you'll have some amazing user base on thumpertalk, everything from carb tuning to what tyres to run. Great help for what ever you need.

Before you post, do a search on their search engine, works very well, and prevents posting something that has been covered a hundred times
