Really think back to a "winning" inline trip,, ,,and even back then the Jap's were copying old tried and true design's as well as comming out with their own,,,the "winning" trip was the MV and they were building four's with shaft's and disc brake's before the asian's , albeit expensive,,,,the MV wasn't about quantity,,just quality,,,,,and if you ever own a classic MV you know that to be the truth,,,,,as far as sound,,,ever hear a big Laverda with the optional open exhaust my bro has one ,,,and that sound,,well,,,sound's like nothing else on earth,,,,

Who races them these guy's do ,,and as I was at Daytona with the head of the CBX owner's group and I being a member of the MV owner's club ,,we had a chance to sit on a 250 Honda six as well as a MV trip in their paddock,,,,

Yea if yamaha was to build a retro cafe racer with a 1,000cc 3 cyl crossplane motor, something like a modern day Laverda Jota I would be very interested

I would be very interested in such a bike. Been saying for a while that when Yamaha get off their asses and put the crossplance cranked R1 motor in the FZ1 with decent suspension and brakes...I'd be first in line. Would have plenty of torque and would sound waaaayyyyy better than any IL4 naked sportbikes hogh pitched scream.

IMHO, the pecking order of engine noise from best to worst:

1. V-Twin (without doubt)
2. V-four (read-Tuono V4)
3. Cross plane IL4 (read R1)
4. Triple (cross plane triple would probably jump to 2nd (maybe 1st))

9.
10.
11. IL4 (all of them, doesnt matter, Jap, MV, BMW...alll sound like shit to me, too obnoxious and high pitched)
Having said this^^^, the MV Agusta Brutale is one beautiful motorcycle so I could probbly put up with it's high pitched whining (sort of like a beautiful model)
