Yamaha XT600 - supermotard?

A friend of mine is selling a Yamaha XT600 at a good price. Is this usable as a "Supermotard" on track? It's just for fun so I don't care if I loose a second per lap. But if it's just to slow/heavy and not usable for the purpose (suspension...) I'll just wait. They've just finished a very nice go-cart track 5 minutes from where I live and it will be open for supermotard practice as well.

The good thing about the XT600 is that it can be used for a bit longer rides as well compared to more extreme supermotos. Maybe for some riding on gravel and for extending the season.

But I was thinking more of a WR426F-SM or a DR-Z400 or something. So what should I do? I have NO experience on neither gravel or supermotard.

Forget about it it's heavy and slow for a super motard, more of an all around... you need something like a drz or Husky Sm610 or similar entry bikes..... light with good suspension and adequate power... for the fun of it

I had one as a loaner whilst my last bike was having some warranty work carried out. It was great for commuting and it would make a decent winter bike with the right tyres on. I don't think it has many pretentions to be track supermoto, too heavy and slow. I think you would lose more than a second a lap!

Well, I'll see your Suzuki & raise you to the limit:

pingvin - (your profile does say Norway) for strictly a track day playbike, an XR650R is OK, although you may find a nice LC4 SM or SMC for sale locally. Loads of power (both LC4 & XR), but the KTM has the proper suspension for it.
The Yamaha is nice, but I'll never understand why they didn't start with a 450, or better yet 660, in a proper SM, not the fat/slow/poorly-suspended-but-pretty XT660X pig. I admit if the XT660Z Tenere were coming to the US, I'd put some better forks/shock on it & head west on the TAT, but that's another story.

Back to you, Joe.....

Sometimes the truth is harsh. Don't get me wrong - I like the XT660 bikes, they just went cheap on the frame & suspension - I think the motor is a great compromise between reliability & performance. BTW, we don't get any of them in the US. If we did, there would be a tricked-out XT-R next to my SD, waiting to become an XT-Z.

I guess I'm asking to much. I want a bike that's a good SM, suitable for touring and also do som gravel and snow riding. So it needs to be light, powerful, reliable, comfortable...and cheap . Well, I'll just keep looking for a good buy. It's a small country so not too many SMs on the market. But no XT600 then

I might end up just trying my SDR on the . It should be good practice before heading down to those hairpins in the Alps. If you can handle a go-cart track well, you can handle anything.

I rode my Duke II on a go-kart track one afternoon - ruined my Rennsports in very fun way. First (rear) street tyre I ever wore out the sidewalls before the center. Or is it centre? You'll never get out of 1st on the SD!!

You are asking for a do-it-all (well) bike, and a 640 SMC or 640 Enduro is going to be your nearest bets, IMHO.
