pretty much all electric vehicles cost too much for mass appeal. Hybrids are still expensive for what they are even tho they've gotten, in CA, more perks to ownership (free toll, carpool ability, gov'mt cash back). They mostly cater to drivers w/ enough leftover cash and environmental guilt to get a second (or third of fourth vehicle) that's greener than the rest.
I don't really see the cost of the battery/power plant going down over the years...unless new non-lithium alternatives are practical. As for the environmental impact of charging a e-vehicle, I still think it's got a smaller CO2 footprint than filling a tank of petrol.
