hi mate, with regards to standard SDs there are two models - 05-06, and 07-on.

They have a few differences, the later models have a revised front head mask, a larger tank, radial brakes, slightly lazier geometry, new clocks, and I think that's it. from late 2008 the new models also got a black swingarm.

My first question is this - is the 57 plate an actual 07 model, or leftover stock? I nearly bought a 58 plate bike before I realised how to tell the difference between the two models!

Simple to find out - just compare the two bikes you mention, easiest way to spot the difference is the headlight mask
Main dramatic difference in the bikes themselves is tank range. The later bikes will give you 50 miles more to a tank.

RE tank range

As far as I can work out the amount of fuel left when the light comes on varies depending on how much Fritz bent the sensor arm it over his knee before fitting it.

my 58 plate 06 model does about 75 to the light and riding carefully I can get a further 25 miles out of it

the 55 plate 06 model only does 55 to the light and while I haven't seen how far it will go, it is cheaper to fill up IYSWIM

The limited tank range of the 05/06s doesn't piss me off... just everyone I ride with!
