Thinking about getting one. Thoughts, comments, reviews... This thing looks so damn fun. Was told to wait for the 2012's. They should come w the Y frame, and new fuel injected.
Don't know about a Y frame but they should have FI next year.
I am on my 2nd 300 exc. Love it. It is a 2 smoker. Nice and light for my woods riding in Oregon. My XR650R has a plate for road and dual sport riding. It's all good Ka-Toom Stuff.
Anybody want to recommend a forum for the 530?
I use to have an 07 540 EXC...damn I miss her. Lots of fun! When FI comes out I think it will be time for another bike.

thumpertalk.com is good so is ktmtalk.com. supermotojunkie.com has some good info as well.
Good bike for a good price. Just need some seventeen inch wheels to go along with it.
Dunno about price but a 530 off road would be a bloody hooligan of a machine! Hope you dont plan on doing tight technical stuff cos the power of that thing will make you want open fast lanes over MX style jumps etc. Good luck keeping the front wheel down too!!
I just called the guy. The bike has 11hrs/300 miles on it. Valve checks are at every 15hrs. Damn low hours and miles. I'm going to go look at it tonight. I will offer him 5K usd, and see what he says. He said that he was willing to negotiate a little bit. I'll be using the bike for mostly commuting, with dirt mixed in there, and of course the jump the curb and off I go type riding. Now I'm going to have to buy all new gear, and of course I'll throw on a pipe. I'm excited and nervous about all of this. I really hate buying used, but that's what I can afford.
I'll sumo it out next summer, and ice ride it this winter. Good times ahead.
Valve chexk intervals are not that close on an EXC mate, thats air filter cleaning and oil changes. Unless its an SX in disguise....in which case AVOID.

But, just remember, these bikes need NO key to start and ride off....so if you are commuting ,ake sure you can either park it indoors or have a damn good chain and lock for it cos they are too easy to pinch and weigh only about 113kg.

17" wheels and new brake caliper bracket should see it good enough for road use. Dont ride it regularky in traffic on nobblies with the standard brake....you wont be able to react/stop in time for traffic.

Sorry if you already know all this mate.
No, thanks, I really don't know anything about this bike. I just know that I want one. I've always wanted an Enduro. I looked at a 2011 a couple months ago and it had a key? Good to know that valve checks are higher than 15hrs, it's not a SX. I read that some where and thought it was for the EXC...
Mine is an 06 and the onoy thing the key does is lock the steering. Maybe newer ones use a key but i'd be surprised.
Had a 525 SX converted to a 6 speed. Around town (backstreets) it is awesome, even with knobbies. If you want to ride 20 miles down a highway, gets boring fast. Most fun i had was doing 100 mph down dirt fire roads, thats were it's in it's element. Knobbies were out fast on pavement, then they will suck in the dirt. Buy your tyres from some local racers who swap out there tyres after a few races, and get some tyre irons, and change them yourself. They like to chew up rear tyres fast, but it's worth it. I've got a suzuki drz 400 now, which is more livible on the streets, but not as good in the dirt(good turning bike, just alittle heavy) but it is indestructable.
If you are buying this bike for 97% offroad use you are making the right decision. It's a dirt bike that has just enough stuff on it to make it street legal. "Dual sport" can mean differenet things to different people. That thing is a dirt bike...not a dual sport bike that you would want to street ride very much at all. At least not w/o major changes that would make it into a super-motard bike. Great bike with damn near unlimited power. If you want a dual sport bike where you do a significant amount of street and fire-roasd stuff, seek the 990 adventure.
Yeah I'm really torn here. I test rode it today on the street, and to be honest, I didn't find it very powerful... I was hopeing the front would come up 1-3rd gears. I know it doesn't have the power of my SD, not even close, but I was hopeing for more. Another thing, I just don't feel good about buying this perticular bike. Looking at the engine, it doesn't look like it's only got 265 miles on it? I saw rust spots on engine bolts that tells me they have been wrenched on. The guy did a half ass job on putting the graphic kit on. The right side case cover has two decent size scuff marks onto the metal from a drop on the trailer. The left side case has again decent size scuff marks (though not as bad as the right case), from his boots he says. The headlight is burnt out, or there's an electrical problem there. He's running some shit semi-syn oil that I never heard of. The rear spring is not a bright KTM Orange, but a faded orange, with two big scuff marks on it that goes through the coating of the spring, looked like the spring was coated with something? But anyways you could see metal. The kickstand doesn't fly up when you kick it up, the spring must be weak? He said something about a buddy messing it up some how. The radiator cap looks old and rusty, not what a radiator cap on on 265 mile bike should have. The chain had rust on it, with 0 lube on it.

I know it's an off road bike so it's going to have some blemishes... But I'm anal, and like things perfect. I know I'd have to replace both case covers, and do something about the botched graphic kit. I don't know??? On the other hand, I had a really good feeling from the seller. Really nice guy, family guy, had two of his young kids out in the garage with him, nice home, he offered me a beer... But my gut is telling me no. I might have to retract my offer, and keep on looking. But I heard that these EXC's are hard to come by used. And then I heard this about the 08's (my KTM dealer Tech said he has never had any problems with the EXC's):

"Keep in mind that some of the '08 first year bikes had a few problems including oil transfer, oil burning, valve stem seals, cam trouble, etc."

Thoughts, comments...?
Sounds like the price is right for what you’re getting. He may have changed the wheel circumference setting to reflect less mileage or possibly removed the magnet in the rotor...? Should still have the original tyres on the bike with that little mileage.
The bike does not have the original tyres, and the rear is about 50-60% gone. He said that the stock tyres were shit so he changed them. The bike has 11.5 hours on it. I don't see this guy trying to doctor anything, or rip somebody off? Maybe he just didn't take good care of it? Never washed it etc... The whole bike just doesn't seem right for the low number of miles/hrs on it, compared to other low mileage bikes.

I was just looking on ebay and say this 2010 EXC with 200 miles and looked at it's engine. Doesn't even compare to my EXC, it's clean as hell. Here's a link to that 2010.

I doubt those hours are correct. It is VERY easy to falsify hours and miles on an EXC. Dont trust the Odometer mate.

Walk away from this one. You need a Duke III or a 690 SMC imo mate....or a 690 Enduro. Mostly road use with the odd bit of dirt and enough power for road fun under 80mph.

You know what, I have never really seen the 690 Enduro! I like it!!!! This might be the ticket. What are the big differences between the 690 Enduro and the EXC?
Problem is, I don't think there are any 690 Enduro's in the States.
Great bike, but as said, just needs a set of 17" wheels and decent brakes

Don't know about the price as I'm in the UK, but factor in an engine rebuild as you can never be sure with these bikes if the hours/miles are correct and you don't know how it's been looked after.

I really wouldn't recommend a 690 as your first off road dude. A friend of mine just bought one, he is a pretty good off roader and a strong lad with little fear. He had it on maximum setting for a while, like 2 hours, that got turned to normal after it tried to kill him. Even that was too insane and it's now on the softest map setting. That is still pretty insane off road and he says when its not trying to kill him its trying to rip his arms out of their sockets. It's got uber torque and it can kick in when you really don't need it and get you in a lot of trouble. It's also a big heavy bike.
On the road with SM wheels it would be maximum setting all the way of course and would be a fooking great laugh. Off road I really think you would have you hands full and would get far more enjoyment out of a much smaller bike. It makes my 450 seem like a pussy cat and its anything but! Even a 450 I think is too much for a first bike. I say that from the experience of doing exactly that. With hindsight a 200 stoker or 400 would have been plenty and I'd prob be a faster rider if I'd bought one.
Sorry dude I thought I read back on the thread that you were a off road noob. Think I'm getting threads confused. In that case I'm sure you know exactly what you are doing.
