A tale of woe

I'm fairly pissed off. After putting a new battery in and getting fresh fuel onboard, the superduke lasted a short trip and a half leaving me to push it the last half mile home (not recommended).

Halfway home the red light battery light came on, followed a few minutes later by the FI light at which point it ran rought for a second and died. Kaput, and that was it. Nada on the button, it wouldn't turn over - only heard the FI unit click and bugger all else. Sigh. And start pushing.

So although I believe it's still under warranty, I'm thinking right now I wouldn't say no if someone offered me a reliable honda. Aaargh. It was one of the rare nice days in a british winter too.

I put the optimated battery back in this morning. It tested at 12.6ish volts before I put it back in the bike. Of course it fired up first thing. With engine running at idle speed got readings of 13.8v from regulator. One of the connector leads on the reg was a bit loose, I tightened that up and checked that everything was properly fastened and connected. I leave it overnight and check it again in the morning. It's a frustrating feeling not knowing if you're going to have a reliable ride...

Stick with it dude Yeh she gives a bit of trouble from time to time but when she runs right there is NOWT out there that will make you smile as much, good luck with the problem, it'll be sorted
No broken cables but a lot of general corrosion/cr*p/etc in all the usual places- replaced starter relay just in case - charging OK, no battery drain, etc - fingers crossed...........

I had the same problem but found out that I was being an idiot and caused it myself.

Check this to be sure if you're not like me (hopefully you're not).

On the negative side of the battery there SHOULD BE 2 cables attached... one thick and one very very small. That small cable can easily get pushed into the batter case when re-installing the battery and you would never know its there. If its not hooked up the bike will start up fine, fun off of the power of the battery while it lasts but wont recharge.

I know its a long shot and it sounds like you would have seen that by now but just make sure TWO wires are hooked up to the negative side.

I didn't do it through the starter motor, but my point was that if you really want to check your draw you should do it between the electrical system and the positive termina.
And 20A creates a lot of sparks too.

Let me know if you figure something out with the plugs.

Yep - given the well-known issues of wiring corrosion, sensitivity of battery condition and my experience this winter, I want to be able to know that the charging system is working OK (ammeter), the condition of the battery (voltmeter) and not just rely on the battery warning light at 10V which is too little info. too late.
