Batteries and Instrument panel

i checked a bit through archives before asking this.

lately my battery hasn't felt like it's got the same ole Poop it once had - in fact woke up to it being weak enough not to start the bike the other day but i attributed it to leaving the headlight on for approx 3 minutes when i parked it in the dark garage.

went to store today and stopped at another store on the way back - When i fired the bike back up battery felt pretty weak again and this time the instrument panel RPM needle wouldn't go back down - it stayed at 10,000 rpm and when i rode off the needle would visually peg itself to the far right position.

Does the instrument panel do strange things like this if and when the battery gets weak ---- I think there was a discussion on this a few weeks ago but i just couldn't find it here.

The key is to keep the battery as poop free as possible. "More poop" is not better.

3 minutes of headlight time shouldn't toast the battery.

A couple of things:

- You don't state how old this battery is, bike mileage, or anything useful like that.

- You don't state how cold it is either. Can't tell where you are from your profile.

Battery life seems to be all over the map. The OE Douglas battery in my '95 BMW M3 lasted 14 years. The OE Yuasa in my '97 Bandit 1200 went 12 years. Most of my bike batteries go 8 to 10 years. The OE GS battery in my '02 FZ-1 is still doin' it's job. It never really gets too hot up here in the mountains but the overnight temps can be frigid. It was -27F here on 4 February earlier this year. I hook my car up to a Battery Tender+ every night, and my bike batteries get charged one hour per week on Battery Tender Jrs.
