Bazzaz Superduke

I picked up my bike from Bazzaz this afternoon. Of course, as soon as I donned my gear to ride it, it started to rain. Anyone in Southern California knows that the absolute worst time to ride is following a brief storm. The roads become as slippery as ice, so its maiden voyage will have to wait until tomorrow.

The good news:

As expected, my bike, with the stock airbox, DNA filter, and KTM Akrapovic map was running "a bit" rich, ha ha. Bazzaz dyno tuned the bike using its Z-AFM device. She showed 5 HP and 4 lb ft gains. The air fuel mixture is also much smoother.

The automapping unit is beyond cool. Basically, once you have the Z-AFM unit, it constantly monitors your A/F mixture and builds a map based upon your riding conditions (altitude, temp, etc.) Once the data is built up, you can import it into one of two map locations within the unit to fine tune your map. It seemed to be very user friendly. If I switch to a Motohooligan Box, it would be a simple matter of riding the bike to create a new map for it.

The bad news:

For the traction control and quick shifter to work, the Bazzaz system requires a means to track engine rpm or rear wheel speed in each gear. The GPS on the SD only reads gears 1-3 and there was no good location to mount a separate wheel speed sensor on the SD as there is on the RC8. Also, because there is not a great market for SD aftermarket parts in the US, Bazzaz has no present plans to construct a bracket to mount a wheel speed sensor on the SD. So, for now, there will be no TC or QS for our beloved SD.

I know of one SD in the country (DIno John?) that has an aftermarket rear brake bracket that would probably serve as a proper perch for the Bazzaz wheel speed sensor, but that is a one off prototype that, I'm told, will never see production. If someone is interested in creating a bracket, they should talk to Chris West at Bazzaz to see what would be required. I'd offer my bike up as a guinea pig if needed.

It takes Bazzaz a couple of weeks to have the wiring harnesses fabricated, so this system should be available in a few weeks.
LOL - SoCal rain - wuss. I look forward to it. Can't think of a better time to behave badly on a bike than in the rain. Especially in SoCal where the rain is relatively warm most of the time.

Interesting result, and probably worth the money for just the Z-Fi + Z-AFM.

I personally don't think the SD needs TC ... so not really concerned. Could easily design a sensor bracket/mount BTW. Would do design gratis. If there's real interest, be glad to contact Chris (?) and get the requirements.

What I'm surprised at, is that its required. What happened to Bazzaz's derivative algorithm that required no wheel sensors (determined rate of change in wheel speed that indicated slip/traction loss, and responded accordingly) - ??? That was their big marketing thing - that they could get you TC w/o additional sensors.

One thing I really like, is that the A/F ratio is substantially higher through most of the operating range. Translates clearly into more power, but probably better mileage also (TBD I realise, but I'd bet on it).

Can you tell me if the Bazzaz unit is running 2 lamda probes IE one for each cylinder or does it just create a single map for both? Pisser about the traction control I was really interested after watching the interview video posted here.

If you do not use two Lambda probs for each Zylinder the whole story is useless. A V2 engine has a mayor
difference in between the two maps. Also i would like to meantion that for KTM the back cylinder in number 1
and not the front cylinder. They should have used this one as the master.

If you are interested in a working auto mapping module tested by a lot of folks on Superdukes and RC8,

You can use it on nearly all bikes, individual map for each cylinder, data logging.
I'm getting no money for writing this, just want to avoid that somebody jumps on the wrong train ..

thats is a difficult question, normally if you go for such a system you also perform other modifications on the engine.
Usually the KTM's are never lean at higher RPM's, in conclusion you do not gain much top end power if you
run at Lambda 13. You gain 2 - 5 PS across the board and torque figures smooth out very nice.

I have modded the airbox, removed secondaries, bored the butterflies from 48 to 50mm using full Akra with baffels in and
reach about 130PS and 100NM torque with an 06 Engine. The 07 ones are usually a little bit weaker. The nice thing is that the engine is totally smoth you can ride it from 2500 until 9800.

I would assume you can reach that goal also with a Powercommander or Bazzaz unit, but due to time and money not all modifactions come always together, so once you have your mapping with the Motty you can test a modifaction and
check if the Motty adds more fuel, if it does you have a power gain. Air + Fuel = Power.

if somebody wants to buy the Motty i can provide a wiring diagram to help installing it.
Im glad you got your bikes fueling sorted CR but as for no TC or QS - what a crock of shit!!!!!!

Thats all i wanted the box for, i wasnt interested in mapping as i prefer TuneECU anyway as the most power i have seen come from my SD is from the ignition side of things which you cant do with the Bazazz box!!!

here is how to wire the Motty. It is not a plug and play story. You need to know electronic basics and understand the wiring. You will need to translate from German to English, let me know if you have dificulties.

Some important things to do upfront :

1. Sync your throttle bodies !!!
2. Disable with TuneEcu the Lambda probs
3. Remove and disable the complete SLS system, otherwise your Lambda readings are not correct
4. Disable gear restriction and remove secondary butterflies, not mandatory

Check your exhaust system for any leaks ! This will also mess up the Lambda readings if there are any.

Assembly steps :

1. Cut wiring harness into correct lenght, the Motty fits perfectly in the back of the bike
2. Most signals will come from the big grey throttle body connector at the right side of the bike, you need to cut the two injection wires and
tap the signal of the TPS sensor, you can you Posi Locks for testing
3. Tap Temp Signal from the sensor at the left side of the bike between the cylinders
4. Tap RPM and Speed signal behind the Mask
5. Mount the LC1 unit to grap the signal from the second Lambda probe and mount it where the snorkel airintake was sitting there is enough room
6. Calibrate lambda probs at free air and use the original position to fit them back in the bike
7. Mount all cable nicely
8. Fire it up
