*Best* exhaust? And MPG changes?

I searched, but couldn't find any consensus on what everyone thinks is the "best" exhaust for the SD. I'm looking for something that'll be a bit louder than stock, but not crazy loud. Cone tipped, not the spout type. And it needs to be passenger friendly. I'm thinking just slip ons as I'm not looking for crazy HP numbers (have an R1 for that), but I'm not opposed to a full system. What would you recommend?

Also, to those that have exhaust, intake, and tuned fuel injection systems, how has your MPG changed. Has opening up the SD killed the MPG or left it alone? I daily commute on the SD and I can't sacrifice the MPG's.

I doubt you'll find many people on here who know how many mpgs they get out of their SD; its just not that sort of bike.
All I know is the tank is too small for the road!

As for exhaust : there are a lot of different systems out there and a lot will depend upon your budget but the the standard choice is Akrapovic.

I love my FMF slip on system. Sounds BADASS! But if you dont want loud these are not for you.
My wife rides with me 90% of the time and she never has an issue with them in the way or burning or anything of the sort.

Ive Akra headers with Carbon Remus hexacone cans.
Good thing with these cans is you can get a decent sized no plate on a tail tidy between them.
Removable baffles so its up to you how loud.
obviously my view but i prefere the shape of them and think they go well with the lines of the bike.

I think the MIVV look sweet on an SD. All of the other brands are kind of generic looking, but MIVV look like they are special made for the SD.

Carbon fiber Leo vince, sound great with baffles in, loud with no baffles but not obnoxious. Overall real deep tone. No intake yet, mileage right at 40 mpg with my setup, i look for fuel at 125-135 mi. on the road, havent ran her dry yet....

I can get 15-16 kilometers per litre cruising between 120-130 km/h.
This is constant throttle, if you start giving it death it will drop to 12-13 km/per litre.
This is with the otto evo 4 map, modified airbox , kn filter, no shafts or flies, akra slipons and pcv with advanced map for each cylinder.
Would be less on the track.

I like the gas mileage on my SD only because my other transportation is a Chevy Silverado 5.3L. Its a hooligan bike...expect 135mpg's and have fun on your commute.

I get 39 MPG blasting pretty good through the canyons. I get roughly 175-180 miles per tank. 160 my light comes on. Go custom exhaust as they all start to look the same. Heres mine

Its a scorpion muffler from a gsxr 1000. It aint stock!!! I gutted it and changed it all over to 2.5" tubing and baffle and then built the tubing to connect it to my head pipes. Its got a pretty wicked sound to it. Should be able to hear it after the track day we are having on April 20th.

Wow, pricey SOB's. I have a source from the R1 forums that's getting me the FMF carbon for 750 shipped or the Yosh carbon for 685. I can't see spending 300+ more on the MIVV or Remus.

Tbh... You only buy pipes for the weight saving and sound... They make very little difference in performance. Its the intake that gives the massive gains.. Better airbox, different velocity stacks (proper ones, not just standard rc8 ones), removal of secondary flies and a tune can result in over 15hp gains in the mid range.

Awesome. I'll go ahead and get the carbon FMF then. I can't see any reason to pay through the nose for a "exotic" exhaust when all it does is shave weight and add noise.

Other option? KTM SE and SM owners are mounting an extra gas tank from Oz to the side of thier bikes after they ditch one muffler on the left side as you are sitting on the bike. I believe this gives you 2 US gallons. Not the look for this clan, tho. As for after market exhaust and gas mileage, my experence is my milage always goes down after I install an after market exhaust or air intake mod. Reason is most sound good to me so I am on the throtle more, and using more gas. Sad part is the throtle twister thinks every one likes to hear the racket. Not true. I now have the stock boat anchor exhaust / cat, 26 LBS? I get 160-180 miles per tank but I short shift, keep the speed in the corners off the brakes and live in the sticks with out all the stop and go that sucks gas. I guess everone knows the catalytic converters are trying to perform a task to help us breathe ...not the bike.

You can also find good deals on used exhaust on Ebay. I bought Akra Evos for $700, and while that isn't cheap, its better than the $1700 msrp, and I like how they sound without baffles. I would expect the FMFs to be more affordable used, but they seem less common, so I'm guessing they could be tough to find used.

Although many SD owners don't care about mileage, I have 8500 miles now and have kept track of mine since the first tank of gas because if it drops drastically, I know something is going out of adjustment or wearing out. With a MotoHooligan intake and flies, O2 eliminators, Akra map, and Akra Evos, I saw no decrease in mileage, but throttle response is far smoother. What did change my mileage was moving to San Diego from Fallon, NV. In Fallon, which is open, sparsely populated and flat, I regularly got mileage on the low 40 mpg range and sometimes as much as 45mpg. In San Diego I only get in the low 30s because I'm either lane splitting around 25mph or going 80, and even with lane splitting, my bike idles a lot more in traffic here. I don't care about the mileage drop because I love riding this thing here, and congested, hilly, curvy roads feel like what this bike was made for.

Good luck with the FMFs. I think they look awesome.

I get well over 30 mpg on mine as well. probably around 35ish. my light goes on around 140 or more. i also have an after market gas cap that allows for a little more fuel, but my old SD got the same mileage.

as i said noodle armed choir boys fook all wrong with my steed guys , thats yank for lads !! , fully serviced , yoshi pipes with an akro map ! must be your roads ,or maybe you do have corners over there ?? and not just one long highway , perhaps it's all the changing gear to accommodate said corners that must be affecting my mpg , maybe !!

Is it possible the euro bikes have some kind of different mapping for emissions or something. I pretty much only ride mine on twisty roads. The two roads I ride every week are 50 miles of nothing but turns, then we turn and go back. So 100 miles round trip. it only has a couple short straight stretches. after that i'm still good for lunch run to the land of beautiful college girls (san luis obispo) which is another 30 miles away. I usually will get gas on the way home.

There is definately something different between the EU and US models with regards of the mileage. Or maybe, yet again, it's just those yanks bigging themselves to have the best, as they always do.

See... One stupid comment stirs up a buch of crap. This site normally has some really good people on here. Once in a while you run across a guy like this who has nothing to contribute to the forum. You have ten guys telling you your mileage sucks but you continue to not listen. Instead you want to take a stab. Well I stab back buddy. Get a good tune and chime back in. I've noticed a huge difference (well to me anyway) going from 110km for 17ish litres to 11 litres for 120kms. I know its only 6 litres but thats a third of a tank. My commute involves 30kms and 13 stop lights so my mileage will always be crap just cos of how I ride it.

All I've done is stop riding at high RPMs all day long on the straight section ie 7-9k rpm (still flogg it from the lights and any appropriate opportunity) but also had the injectors cleaned and the fuel filters replaced. So 5 litres less for the same mileage makes me smile more. Means I can twist the throttle even more often!

Wow, didn't expect to stir all this up.

Buddy my feelings are far from hurt. The only thing hurt here is you thinking your bike is running primo when everyone is telling you it ain't . Just remember who started the riot. Now take some constructive critisim and fix that bike.

There may be a little difference in the euro vs the us models but I kinda highly doubt that roughly 2 gallons of fuel disappear on the euro model. That bike would run really crappy. Clean your filters , drop in a new map (joker), and change your plugs. Let us know the difference.

I run the supposedly very rich Ktm Akra mapping, have split hoof appendages
Weigh in stone myself and love Mickie D'z. The mapping makes the difference.

FYI the 05/06 bikes (which weren't sold in the US) have a smaller tank as standard, plus different internals, hence the such low mileage

That I'll agree with that , but (Bermo KTM) does not have a 05/06 bike.

08 SD, Re-packed Leo vince cans, 02 disabled, SAS disabled, Motobox, no flies (shafts still in), 97/98 RON only with James' map.

1 tank of fuel for me though is a lot of small separate trips which means quite a lot of fuel used warming the bike up normally to 2 or 3 bars. Also, I often get stuck in traffic so again using fuel without actually going very far.

I got 160 miles before the light in France on the standard Akra map! There's so many factors in this MPG to be honest. I only weigh 70kg with gear on and our maximum speed limit is 40mph so there's a few more to throw in.

I noticed when I installed the Motobox my fuel economy went way down...
I gots me some Remus exhaust being shipped. I expect after the install my fuel economy will suffer even more...

Yeah removing the shafts is near the top of my to do list. I imagine removing them and a basic breathing mod is enough to warrant a new map. Soon......

So to throw a little more fire on this crazy thread I just fueled up the SD for the first time. Exactly 4 US gallons with 160miles on the trip. So 40MPG on the dot. Not bad.

I just got back from my local KTM dealer to pick up my bike for 4000 miles service and they had brand new Leo Vince all carbon cans. They look so awesome, black on black. I'm probably gonna pick them up next week after I get my tax return.

hi all
any pics of the cans on the bikes , not sure what to buy ,normally use akros .
could do with a change . seems a lot to spend out to have nothing inside.
