Took sdr to the KTM dealers here in france today to book it in for the 15k service - unplugged optimate and set off - halfway there the battery warning light comes on,so I turned off lights and it went off,a bit further down road it came on again then fi light came on, anyway got to dealers (in the middle of a Kawasaki Testride day)and he tested battery and it was o.k but no charge, battery was good but it wasnt charging at all,so I have left it there and he said its 2 weeks before they have time to look at it
Only other KTM rider there amidst people queing to ride the lastest zx10r was a guy on a new rc8 and he said it had been the most trouble he had ever had with a bike after years of no probs with the jap stuff,is this the price we have to pay ???

And any thoughts on the no charge problem would be great - rather worrying the guy who came out to check the battery didnt know where it was FFS !!!!
Check the wire from the regulator to the battery negative. These have a habit of braking at the connector on the battery terminal.

This will give you the problem you have described.
Cheers I'll email the dealer and ask him to look there first - it sa couple of hours away now - I got a lift back and left it there - not sure it was a good idea or not but it was that or else risk it dying in the middle of nowhere.
Where in France are you anyway?
It's a 30 minute job to diagnose the charge circuit if you know what you're doing.
I have a charger plugged to mine when not in use. i keep finding the wire to the charger rotten through. had to solder the wire on the large white plug to battery too cos that rotted through. I keep meaning to search for more info but as its only my charger wire its not much of a worry. seam the wires down in the battery box take a beating keep a check on them.
Im in the sticks - 22/56 border - Pontivy.

Yep if it wasnt in for the 15k service I would of brought it home and looked at it myself .
I had the exact same thing happen to me, except that I didn't make it all the way to the dealership. At least it died _after_ I exited the freeway. I had to push it for 1/2 hour... not too bad. At the time I didn't know what was wrong, so I just bought a new battery, installed it at the dealership parking lot and rode away. I almost got all the way home. Some thing happen. again. So I investigated.

Long story short, it was the wire going from the regulator to the battery negative that broke at the connector on the battery terminal exactly as described previously by Ducati Pete.

It happened to me at the trackfest last year. I put in my spare reg and only noticed the broken connection after.
