Carbon Fiber Airbox

My winter project was making a carbon fiber airbox similar to the motobox. I'm using an oval K&N filter. I've almost got mine made, but had some problems with the bottom plate so I'm making a new one. I'd be willing to make a couple more this summer to sell to pay for the costs of patterns and molds. I'll have to verify fit on my 08 after I get the new plate done and I don't know what the differences are between 08 and other years so I can't say whether it will fit anything else. Look like something anyone wants? Also I don't know how to post pics so they probably did't work. There are some photos in the Modifications album though.

Sweeeeeeeeet

Did you use one of motohooligans special order filters? what filter did you use? type/model?
i dont think its a special order filter, isnt it just a stock round one that he designed the motobox around? that was the part of the beauty of the thing.

I'm interested....

Made hot:

Nice work! I'm secretly working on the same...
I like moto's one but the other half won't be happy if I buy one now as I just got an Mivv.

Got one laser cut in SS as a mould and prototype. Working on it to seal under the tank like the aprilia ones. No top, the bottom of the tank is the lid.

Here a pic of the early prototype.

This is a hobby. I started in composites making my own snowboards. I modeled it up in a 3D CAD program and then had patterns made using a rapid prototype method called stereolithography. I used the patterns to make a fiberglass mold and then wet lay up the carbon fiber in the mold and vacuum bag it. Aside from the rapid prototyping it's a pretty standard technique. The air filter is a K&N E-3672.

I'm thinking maybe around $250 including the filter??? I'm expecting a new bottom plate pattern this week and then I have to make a mold and then make a part and then check fit on my bike (the bottom plate in the pics interferes with the secondary butterfly linkage by a hair). I don't think I would have any ready to sell for a month at the earliest.

I have mine mounted and have been using it all summer, but it's taken a few tries to get another one made, and I've been doing a lot of riding lately (as you should all understand). I hope to have the second one finished in a week or so. I have a bunch of photos of the finished one on my bike so maybe I'll put them in the gallery.
I put some new photos in the Modifications album.
