Lot's of old toothbrushes and cheap 4 dollar degreaser. The degreaser can be washed out with hot soapy water before lubricating.I once used kero and kero is a great cleaner and left my chain sparkling but it is so much easier to spray on the degreaser and more importantly, the kero leaves a greasy finish even after a good hot soapy water bath so the final lubrication(I use lanolin lube most of the time or Motorex if going on a big trip over a period of a few days)does'nt adhere as it should. There are some degreasers with a certain chemical which I cannot recall, that can damage orings but I used this stuff for the life of my last chain with no oring damage.Using used toothbrushes gets into those hard to get at areas and is gentle on the orings unlike some of those chain brushes you can buy.Everyone has there method and as long as it results in a cleaned, lubed, aligned and correctly tensioned chain,it's all good.Personally I love spending time on my bike so I don't care how long it takes to clean a chain and other parts of my bike because you would be suprised how many little loose, broken, cracked, oil leak etc you come across while cleaning your bike.Having a good motorcycle table lifter helps a lot because you are not bending over down to the floor, lot's of space for trays under the chain area for the runoff to drain into and space for my beer can.Cheers
