CHAIN REPLACEMENT

i,m sitting with 13,000 miles on my oe chain
going to change it soon as i do enjoy wheelieing every where
and also treat my local roads like a race track(b roads very quiet except for sheep)
also enjoy trackdays, so chain well abused.
so the question is how long do you get out of your chain

Either when the sprockets wear out or when the chain snaps

I changed mine at 12 thou,the chain looked fine but because i like to wheelie a bit i decided that 12 thou was the time to change so i replaced the sprockets too. The above is based on nothing mechanical just a feeling i had at the time that it was time to change it

i wheelie all the time and got 21,000mi out of mine. sprockets look good. it was only recently i noticed it wont hold and adjustment.
the chain was rubbing on the sidewall too. time too go

I really dont know when.. I think my chain is a worn, but most people tell me that it's fine..

I dont know what gearing to get.. some say 16-40, others say 17-42 or something.. Maybe I should just stick with the standard.. hmm

just replaced mine chain and rear sprocket look fine but front sprocket was toast
advice take two mins and remove front sprocket cover and check it out

My chain is starting to eat my rear tyre so safe to say it's toast. Just asking the guys who supply my dirt chains for a quote. They are amazingly competitive and will let you know.

I replace when i can lift a link off the rear sprocket too much and/or when adjustment goes too far. So far both times were at 19000 miles on each chain.

Also, when sprockets are hooked....whichever comes first.

Just replaced my chain and sprockets 15000mls, sprockets looked ok, chain had a bad tight spot and felt rough through pegs, nice and smooth with new 1 on.

Ok who here thinks I need a new chain and sprockets?? Imagine my surprise this morn to find 4 teeth in a row missing Safe to say I got my monies worth out of that sprocket!

I think Scotsduke had a sprocket like that on his XR400.......for some reason it just would not go up the scary hill on the last outing ...

no excuse it,s just that his bike is heavier,longer swinging arm OHH and he,s got two stone of belly to keep the front end down to stop it flipping over.
and klink ask him about his chain and why i had to tow him home

Yes, my chain snapped on the last outing and had to be towed home by Graham

And yes my bike is heavier.....longer swing arm......and I have a bit of a belly and these factors all help to keep the front wheel down......... but doesnt hide the fact that im still "King of the Hill"

tbh I'm not sure. At least 15k miles.

You're a lucky man Craig both sprockets look well fooked to me,it's always best to check em regularly the consequence's of having the chain jump the sprockets would be disastrous.
I once went out on my XR with badly hooked sprockets thinking i'd just get a couple more miles out of them,completely stripped the rear one and needed help getting home Lesson learned without getting injured

I'll be changing mine again after they've done another 12000 mile's no matter what,just for peace of mind.

Yeah I know I let that go way too far. I think the last couple of blasts have just destroyed it. It didn't seem that bad 3 weeks ago but gave her a good thrap to bow out cobwebs... seem it blew out a few teeth as well. Must try and remember just how good a new chain and sprockets feels.
