Classic's sound off

That Flying Squirrel 2 smoker sounded HOT, for it's age.
First time I heard one run.
Steve McQueen had one.
Watched Steve try to jump the barb wire fence last night.
Still did not make it.
Photo shop opportunity.

The Scott was a really cool machine,,,always admired the last incarnation ,,the Silk 700, good looking machine,,,but the Ducati 750 F1 sounded great then again the MV 750 Guzzi Sport, so many bikes sound so "generic" these days, must be the FI ,,,

Mid morning, early 80's, up high at the first check point for the 100's MC Hare & Hound, Dan Smith out front, his 500 Husky singing to the desert…that my friends is classic.

Yeah…I heard the Penton miss a gear too!! LOL

So many great bike sounds and surroundings/memories to match…

The sharpness of an Ossa Stiletto, before they had a muffler - the snarl of a 650 Triumph Scrambler desert sled - the brashness of a Villars/Greeves……then there was the Brooks brothers leading the way on 125 DKW's.

" his 500 Husky singing to the desert…that my friends is classic."

I had a 430 Husky. A friend took a 500 Husky in on trade and I took it for a test ride. Beast! Sad part about this 500, it vibrated so much I could not sit on the seat, so no deal. Stuck to my 430.

Let us not forget the Suzuki Cyclone TM400…tank slapping monster that it was!!!

The younger riders of today don't know what they missed…3" of rear travel, drum brakes, Maico break-o primary chains, hand grenade Bultaco Pursangs/Astros, Curnett shocks, Terry Cables, aluminium/fiberglass fenders/gas tanks, points ignition, lever perches welded to the bars, smell of Castrol R, Phantom Duck of the Desert (quack quack, don't look back)……..ahhh, the good old days!!!

Think I might sell the 3 piece abs fenders for a 72 CZ 380 yellow tank I still have in the closet….

Do you remember who Super Hunky was?? LOL

PICS! This is an era that I only know about from magazine articles and "On Any Sunday." I'd love to see some old race photos if you've got em.

My gal's from north east Oregon. I still remember the first time I said the name Hodaka around her. Her face lit up and she said the she has not heard that name for some time. Turns out her class mate / friend was the daughter of Hank Koepke one of the guys who brought the Hodaka to the USA. Small world indeed.

Pictures from "the era" might be tough to come by from individuals as we were racing…not filming and like what was said in On Any Sunday regarding desert racing…desert racing is a lonely endeavor and those at the finish are usually waiting for someone else. I'll try and find one in particular…club photo of the 100's MC at the rocks (camp site at Anderson Dry Lake in Johnson Valley) with a very shy young boy standing off to the side…grew to be the 7 time overall winner of the Baja 1000…Steve Hengeveld.

Remember standing on line in Westwood California for the 1971 premiere of On Any Sunday
Carlsbad GP when Roger DeCoster, Sylvain Geboers and Joel Robert just demolished the americans
Superbowl of Motocross in the Coliseum - Bob Hanna and Jimmy Weinert dicing for the lead at Anaheim
Saddleback Park - Ascot - Indian Dunes - DeAnza - the start of green stickies - BLM BS - the sabotage of the marked
course for the B to V in 1983 (protestors removed and relocated course markers onto closed land)
1965 Suzuki 80cc

1983 Johnson Valley Prairie Dogs race - 1982 KTM 495

1981 KTM 250MX - installed 1st gear from enduro model for tight riding and installed larger cs sprocket for more top end

I watched the build on Cafe Racer TV,,,,on Velocity channel,,,,they turned the barrel around so the carb faced forward and with no gearbox it's a hoot to ride...

Finally found a few of the old pictures…
1) 100's MC @ The Rocks in Johnson Valley (Anderson Dry Lake) in Southern California…1982
Club got it's name from the fact that most members rode Hodaka 100's set up for the desert (60's)
The little boy standing off to the left is Steve Hengeveld…grew to be Team Honda's 7 time "overall" winner of the Baja 1000
