Dark times ahead

Fellow riders, I've come to you many times in the past, often in despair when my loved one needed attention. This time it's me that have strayed into darkness and now struggle to get back into the warmth and comfort of what we all know very well.

I've test ridden the 2011 990 SMT (ABS) a couple of times and have a sweet deal for a 2000 km 2011 with ABS coming up this Thursday. The deal includes we swapping my SD-R 2010 against the SMT.
The bike is awfully good, practical (which is the complete opposite of the SD), good fueling (it's nice but never really bothered me at all), great grunt in the engine, pulls wheelies like crazy, amazing brakes (the best I've ever tried on any bike), and it's a lot of room for me wife to come along for longer Europe trips. It can even manage lighter gravel roads they say.. so what do I have against it. Maybe the looks are a bit against it... I also do a lot of track days which I love.
I've done over 20000 KM on the 990 SD 2008 and another 7000 KM on the SD-R. I know the inns and out of the SD, it's like the backside of my own hand, it's stiff, great handling, amazing engine, sharp looks. Do I dare change or will I be disappointing?

Please, help me! I'm not sure what has gotten into me.

I too have come across this feeling, for a whilei was looking at the new mulistrada, then I got back on my SuperDuke and it slapped some sense back into me. I may one day have a mulistrada, but I will never, ever let the SuperDuke go. It's just too much fun. No other motorcyle I've owned is as much fun as the SuperDuke. Come to your senses!

Is there any descent luggage rack available for the SD? Something that can give a passenger some backrest on longer trips and as well carry a big box of stuff?

It's time to try something new. Always liked the big Super Moto's from KTM. If I don't like it, I'll get the SD-R again. Anyhow, this forum is to good to leave so you'll see me around anyway

You owe this forum long 3 page comparison test of your new bike with SD - SDR

As promised, here's my initial reflections.

Really great handling despite the "size". Even more great if set to sport mode on suspension. Not as "bouncy" as the SD. Great grip and traction from stock tyres. Wheelies with ease of 1,2 and 3.

Smooth and powerful engine, a lot more enjoyable /easy to live with than the SD. Almost no hunting, great at low revs, even with a passenger. Not the same punch on the top end as the SD-R has but still, really usable power at lower revs. Good sound from the pipes, even stock. (will change to something more loud though)

Epic comfort, I rode two full days, didn't even realise I was riding a motorcycle. Excellent even with a passenger on the back which reported great comfort as well compared to the SD.

Good fuel consumption, got about 250 km on one tank, no touring . When I refilled, I still had 3.5 liters left. So maybe full tank will get me something like 270, 280 km.

Looks, starting to like it alot. Will get some gripsters on the sides of the tank.

It's a keeper, awfully good motorcycle. After 4 years with the SD, this was the right bike for me. Will still hang around here though

Glad to hear that you're enjoying it mate.

And glad to hear a review in comparison the old SD/R

As expected, a SMT is a lot better as passenger/touring bike.

It's designed to be exactly that: a Supermoto with luggage and better range and wind protection , and the Supermoto is already a nice bike to ride more relaxed then the SD/R.

Nice to see that fits your needs.
