You are a brave man scotsduke, I dont think I could ever take an angle grinder to my bike.

I am amazed of the construction of the exhaust. The way that flows makes no sense. It looks like to flows into one big connector and some of it gets forced through one of those four pipes. Why wouldnt they use two bigger pipes?

Just a general safety comment, you probably should be using a guard with a cutting wheel like that, at my job I have seen a lot of our welders get cut with wheels like that after either removing or modifying the guards.

Hi scotsduke, You are a trooper, truly inspirational. Thanks for the documentation of this difficult task.

To the designer of this pipe, to whom I pose my questions to. So artful yet inefficient, so complex, but perfect lines. Yes... a work of art.

The interior is usually in accordance with the outside until now. A diverse mind at work with no 2nd opinion. Smug at it's best.

Not caring what it is as much as what it looks like, styley. purely form over function. Less is better.

Sorry for digging up this old thread, but I have a thought I'd like to share
If everything turns out right, I will be recieving an original exhaust for the sd by the end of the week. Plan is to open it up, and take the cat out.
But I was wondering, if I'm correct all the guys who did it here, just opened it, took the crap out, and closed it again.
But would it not be better to take the crap out, and replace it with a Y piece from the front of the exhaust, to the silencers (as in my beautiful paint creation )
Image
I could be completely wrong here, but somehow I think this would be better than just leaving that huge space open.
Any thoughts on this?

Is there a difference between the exhaust for the 05-06 and the 07-now?

Digging up an old thread.......

I'm planning on doing this too. Question though: with all the inners taken out, including the perforated heat shields, doesn't teh exhaust get too hot under the seat? There is a lot of plastics there and if you take everything out there is no mode double sheeting of the outside of especially the Y part.
And on sound, has anyone taken a Db measure? I like a bit more sound on my SD but I don't fancy a headache
Had a BMW R1100s before with laser cans, without the Db killers the sound was just too loud on longer trips.

Thanks,
Marc

Hi Nampus,

Just bought that one...
Cheap enough not to risk messing up my own anker.....

If it really is too loud (104 Db is LOUD) then I can always put my own back on.

Thanks,
Marc

Here is another option to think / know about. The stock cans from the KTM Adventure SE and SM bikes are sitting in your brothers / cousins shed collecting spiders and dust. They also install aftermarket cans on thier bikes. Unlike the SD they are two seperate cans / with cats, that can be de-cated, and de piped. I cut one apart a few weeks ago and removed every thing from the inside. My plan is to find some perforated pipe and wrap exhaust fibers around it as you do on two smoke dirt bikes. I will cut the can near the inlet and yank the guts out, all of it. The plane is to make a sleave at this junction and pop rivet the pices together for future replacing. The trick is to insert the perf wraped pipe inside so it does not rattle. It might get welded to the inlet side and jamed to meet the outlet.
You can run one or both cans with a little head scratching.

This will look stock to the cops, but should really flow and go.

PS. Got a spare set of stock cans in the shed with me new to me hand me down 04 950Adventure, cause the Adventure has the AKO,s already installed.

Thing is when you starting spending over £100 you may as well save up and buy some proper cans.
marc lenssen

marc lenssen

Proper cans yes, one of these days maybe. I would like a full remus system then, so quite some saving up.

I however like the look of the stock cans over most aftermarket ones, so a working solution with the standard ones is preferable to me.

So,

Old decatted anker is on its way to me. I'll mount it somewhere this week. I have standard set up bike and run standard mapping with the O2's switched off. What mapping would be most suitable for a standard airbox and de catted standard cans? The standard mapping (cause I don't know where the extra air would come from) or the richer Akra mapping?

Thanks,
Marc

marc lenssen

Mine was fine with the standard mapping. Prepare yourself for alot of popping on the overrun. Or block of the sas system. I loved the pops and bangs. I miss it a little since i installed the motobox and blocked of the sas.

Ok,

Cat is gone so SAS can go too....

Thanks Nampus,

Hey lads sorry for resurrecting an old trade too but is this worth doing? I'm after searching ebay high and low trying to find a reasonably priced exhaust but nothing coming up under €500. I also think the standard exhausts look pretty well but just want more bark and a bit of popping would be nice! Far safer around my part with a lot of dopey farmers pulling out also
