#7I'm also loving the 1198 in white, wish it had the traction control though. The S model I don't like the wheels as much as the standard 1198 10 spoke.

#8As with most Ducati models I'll wager the gas tank is undersized and the "racing" dry clutch is far too noisy for a modern street bike.
There that's my 2 cents.

#36I think the 1098 is easily the best looking bike on the road. This could has been equally as good with very little effort.
Hate those exhausts. Frame is too busy. Everything else looks like Halfords stuck on bling.
But, if it goes better than the SD with a similar riding position I will buy one in an instant.
Bikes are for riding not looking at. It took me a while to get into the SD. I used to think a streetfightered 2003 R1 would be the ultimate.
I am still tempted to buy a 1098s and try to do better myself though

#38Anyway, I'll trade looks for better handling and more power any day (not that they need to be mutually exclusive). My first experience of a proper motorcycle was driving my friends Kawa 250KX when I was 15. My own "bike" at the time was a tired Yamaha DT50 moped (1hp) and I'll never forget the happiness I got from riding the KX -such an adrenaline rush, made my knees shake and put the biggest grin on my face for a long time afterwards.
When I first drove a 1098 my knees did shake a little coming of the bike and it reminded me of that day with the KX (not as big of a rush though, -unfortunately I doubt I'll ever get back to the same level of excitement I got from the KX 16 years ago).
The 1098 engine is far superior to any other bike I've driven, the gearbox is near perfect and the sound with termis rocks! So if the Streetfighter is that but in a form that I can use around town then I couldn't care less what it looks like.

#44I rode a 1098s on Saturday. Absolutely ferocious. Explosive power, yet the bike was so controlled and precise, it was amazing.
The Streetfighter has almost the same motor in it, but with a more comfortable package. Can't wait!

#55By the way I know what it means mate us British invented etiquette
I see nothing in my post to get your knickers in a twist about. Rolling eye normally indicates someone thinks whatever is silly, frustrating, annoying or not true, so I was just calling you out on it and wondered what you mean, it's my time of the month, no one said I signed up to take crap. I call it how it is sir.

#69Point i'm making is that the superdukes' strength is its fun factor and cornering ability relative to the type of machine it is.
As the other fella said some will love it on looks alone and for the average rider it will be of little relavence.
I'm coming at this from a performance orientated point of view. I can ride at a respectible pace and appreciate bikes at the more focussed end of the spectrum.
But going back to the average rider point of view, engine, chassis and how the package gels is just something to talk about at the pub. objectively assessing different qualities of different bikes is not within the grasp of your average rider.
As for ducati making awesome machines.....no arguement on that one.
They are however, much more difficult to ride at anything approaching 8 or 9 tenths and as a result less enjoyable and ultimately slower in all but the most talented hands.
Post 70 by Ducati Pete,
#70NOT, so far.... I have seen not a tail lamp in my front view. I like the sight of that sleek headlamp in my rear view, thus far I have not noticed how stellar they are,
none of the 3 doods are bad riders... just the opposite ... they are all accomplished riders but did not feel comfortable at moderate speeds in the tight stuff,
one of the 3 immediately sent all of his suspension parts off for further development. He has spent many $$ getting the duc dialed in but is very happy with it.

#72in the end in large and small the choice is up to you.
need to say a bike with a 58.1" wheel base will be a cruiser,
not fit for the likes of me. any lump won't make up the difference of that.
Post 73 by topendz,
#73That in turn will make it heavier or on par with the duke when fuelled.
We are comparing dry weight to dry weight. KTM lists the Super Duke at 186kg dry. That's 41 pounds heavier than the Ducati. you have to add oil, coolant and fuel to both bikes, so while they will both gain weight, the Ducati will remain about 40 pounds lighter than the KTM, and that is a huge difference.
On the engine power advantage......what good did it do for the monster s4rs?? A bike with fantastic specs, componentry etc......just unfortunately fell short underneath a spirited rider. Fantastic for posers and straight line heroes.
The Monster is a 15 year old design. It has been updated a few times, but it is still from the early 1990's. The Streetfighter is based off of the 1098 platform. Again, big difference!
I would wager that with a control rider (a sport orientated one at that), for comparitive purposes, an sd would be quicker over a given section of twisties.
I guess time will show whether or not you are correct. However, I expect that the comparison tests will include things other than the tightest mountain roads. If all I rode on was the Tail of the Dragon, and I was Rossi, perhaps the KTM will prove to be the "better" ride.
But by and large, as a street bike, and one that might see some track use, I am putting my money on the Ducati.
Ducati's, by and large, are owned and ridden by those more concerned with image than performance. And in road legal trim, like for like they dont perform as well as their direct competitors......that goes double for their 1098 model. and no.......the 20k R does not have a direct rival.
A Ford is probably easier to drive then a Ferrari, I don't know that it makes the Ford a better car.
If all we cared about was the best performance, we would all buy a 2008 Fireblade and call it a day. But Ducati and KTM owners alike do care about image, and they do want something difference from the "unwashed masses".
Believe it or not i dont hate ducati. And i dont own a superduke.
Perhaps if you did own and ride both you would be better prepared to discuss the differences?
Experience however, has shown that on the road and in road legal trim at least, ducati's have tended to look better than they go.......
I don't have the same experience. It all comes down to the rider and I have seen some wicked fast Ducati riders up in the mountains. I do think that they may be more cautious and responsible and less "squidly", as they tend to be more expensive and all that.
Not sure what you mean by road legal trim. Here I can throw on whatever exhaust and stuff I want. My S4RS had an exhaust that was over 125dB. LOL
