I spent Saturday in Lafayette, IN at Twin City Motorsports, a small independent sales and service bike shop that was having an open house. Mark Harrell had his dyno set up in the parking lot and was doing maps and horsepower runs all day. I had him make a custom map on TuneECU for my Superduke, had been running it with a map I'd cobbled together since I installed the CPR Rottweiler intake system a couple of weeks ago. Here are some pics of the set up, sorry for the crappy cell phone photo quality, my camera is on vacation in Europe without me.

He got it dialed in pretty good the first run through, I was interesting in having him smooth out the low end response and throttle jerkiness, as well as maximizing the power in the mid and upper rpm ranges. I took it out for a test ride while he started doing horsepower runs on all the other bikes lined up waiting. It had very good power, pulled strong to redline with no flat spots, but it was still a little jerky at low rpms. Came back and talked to Mark and he said if I could hang out he'd put it back on the dyno after he ran a few other bikes. I had nothing to do all day so happily hung out and watched a variety of machines run through the dyno, ate some free burgers and dogs at the open house, and chatted with the shop employees.
Check out this S1000RR, belonged to one of the technicians at Twin City Motorsports, just in case you can't read it, that's 188.5hp!


This clean 97 Suzuki TL1000S put out 120hp.

Nice old 97 Yamaha FZR600 produced 81hp.

Suzuki B-King did 181hhp.

The blue Hayabusa had nitrous, hit 192HP. The yellow 'Busa drag bike next to it is a turbo with supposedly 300+, but didn't run it.

Once he got done with the horsepower runs, he took my bike for a spin around the block so he could feel what I was talking about. He put it back on the dyno and started messing with the low rpm response, identified the jerkiness as being between 2000-3000 rpm and 1-3% throttle opening. He backed off the timing a couple of degrees in those ranges, tried it again, backed off another degree, tried it again, finally settling on 4.5* removed between 1800 and 3500 rpm, 1-5% throttle opening. I took it for another spin and it was much improved, low rpm throttle roll on was very smooth, and it accelerated from idle without jerking, about the only thing that's still not perfect is very low rpm constant throttle, like 2000 rpm in 1st or 2nd gear, still has some jerkiness, but that may just be nature of the high performance twin. I'm very happy with the results, took the long way home and enjoyed every mile of it. Engine is very free revving, it feels extremely flexible and I can accelerate smoothly without having to keep the revs up high like before. A day well spent!
Oh yeah, it produced 120.7 hp and 75.5 ft/lb torque, since stock #'s are like 105-110 hp at the wheel I'm quite thrilled that my set up produced a 10% power increase! Just fyi, it's a 2008 US spec standard Superduke with FMF Apex Exhausts, CPR Rottweiler intake, O2 eliminators, 2nd flies and shafts removed, SAS removed.
