Dyno Day with the Superduke!

I spent Saturday in Lafayette, IN at Twin City Motorsports, a small independent sales and service bike shop that was having an open house. Mark Harrell had his dyno set up in the parking lot and was doing maps and horsepower runs all day. I had him make a custom map on TuneECU for my Superduke, had been running it with a map I'd cobbled together since I installed the CPR Rottweiler intake system a couple of weeks ago. Here are some pics of the set up, sorry for the crappy cell phone photo quality, my camera is on vacation in Europe without me.

He got it dialed in pretty good the first run through, I was interesting in having him smooth out the low end response and throttle jerkiness, as well as maximizing the power in the mid and upper rpm ranges. I took it out for a test ride while he started doing horsepower runs on all the other bikes lined up waiting. It had very good power, pulled strong to redline with no flat spots, but it was still a little jerky at low rpms. Came back and talked to Mark and he said if I could hang out he'd put it back on the dyno after he ran a few other bikes. I had nothing to do all day so happily hung out and watched a variety of machines run through the dyno, ate some free burgers and dogs at the open house, and chatted with the shop employees.

Check out this S1000RR, belonged to one of the technicians at Twin City Motorsports, just in case you can't read it, that's 188.5hp!

This clean 97 Suzuki TL1000S put out 120hp.

Nice old 97 Yamaha FZR600 produced 81hp.

The blue Hayabusa had nitrous, hit 192HP. The yellow 'Busa drag bike next to it is a turbo with supposedly 300+, but didn't run it.

Once he got done with the horsepower runs, he took my bike for a spin around the block so he could feel what I was talking about. He put it back on the dyno and started messing with the low rpm response, identified the jerkiness as being between 2000-3000 rpm and 1-3% throttle opening. He backed off the timing a couple of degrees in those ranges, tried it again, backed off another degree, tried it again, finally settling on 4.5* removed between 1800 and 3500 rpm, 1-5% throttle opening. I took it for another spin and it was much improved, low rpm throttle roll on was very smooth, and it accelerated from idle without jerking, about the only thing that's still not perfect is very low rpm constant throttle, like 2000 rpm in 1st or 2nd gear, still has some jerkiness, but that may just be nature of the high performance twin. I'm very happy with the results, took the long way home and enjoyed every mile of it. Engine is very free revving, it feels extremely flexible and I can accelerate smoothly without having to keep the revs up high like before. A day well spent!

Oh yeah, it produced 120.7 hp and 75.5 ft/lb torque, since stock #'s are like 105-110 hp at the wheel I'm quite thrilled that my set up produced a 10% power increase! Just fyi, it's a 2008 US spec standard Superduke with FMF Apex Exhausts, CPR Rottweiler intake, O2 eliminators, 2nd flies and shafts removed, SAS removed.

Nice speedmotorrad!! I also have an 08 and the exact same mods are being done. Is it possible to get that map from u? I have no access to a dyno, and don't fully understand the auto-tune and bazzazz stuff, and was just hoping that someone would eventually have the same stuff I was looking for. But, here's also my delimma..........my bike has none of the hesitation or jerkiness that everyone speaks of....she's dead stock cept for larger rear sprocket, and i'm also at 5500 feet. Do you think i need to keep my map and work on it, or will any map work? I've been holding off of my mods for these exact reasons.....any thoughts from anyone would be helpful......thanks all!

I am not sure how he can make a proper map using the sniffer in the mixed exhaust stream.
Each cylinder needs to be mapped separately at each O2 sensor port using wide band/range sensors.
I sure wouldn't have complained about 120hp if I would have had it since I only got 107 at best on race gas but with the way he did your map I would be concerned about a disparity between the tuning of your front and rear cylinders.
Does anyone else agree/disagree?
My tuner took an hour writing a map for me using only a PC3 which means no dicking with the timing. If we had used TunECU I am sure our numbers would have been better.

I was always told / understand that you can not set mixtures using an exhaust probe at all...
And my understanding is that all dynos use an exhaust probe, how else would you read fuel/air mixture?
Normally replace sensor in each header with probe, so they sample as close to exhaust port as possible

Yep, that's what I was talking about, putting sensor in each header. I don't see how you can tune each cylinder without sniffing each one individually.

At the risk of saying what everyone knows. Just because an engine runs well and seems to be fine, doing a dyno run in the way I described is the only way you will know if a cylinder is running too lean. Too rich,? No problem?
Too lean? Say hello to engine failure.
I found this out when the mfg. of a fuel changed formula and added a bit of oxygen.
The map I had for the previous formula was sure to have burned through my pistons sooner or later.

I have also been warned of guys who "make more hp" when they dyno a bike.
My tuner emphatically states that he does not find hp. It is either there or not, he just tunes the engine properly and sees what comes out.
I would think that with tweaking the timing that this might be debatable?

For followers of the AMA, my tuner was/is the guy who tunes Tyler O'Hara's XR1200. That is a POS platform and they are doing some interesting things with it.
Tyler is the points leader.
