i suspect the dyno runs you have seen before are only just that...RUNS. The ones where people are just told their mac BHP figure at bike fairs/rallies etc.

My guy did several passes at intervals of 10% throttle but also did a 2% and 5% throttle opening...which means he did 12 increments of throttle opening (not just 8, ahem [not that it's a competition anyway ]).

Sounds like your man did a good dyno session for ya buddy but it doesnt sound *that* special.....maybe you just had really bad experiences in the past....or maybe I got lucky too!

FWIW I'd certainly be a little sceptical about how 'great' he says his kit is...he's hardly an impartial commentator on his own business gear is he.
I've not got much time to spend posting right now, but I'm pretty sure decent dyno guys do runs other than at full throttle.

Funny thing is I was shown a few runs recently that showed a SD making more power with part throttle (think it may have been 85%) than full throttle.
Any dyno guy worth his salt will spend at least 2 hours setting up a bike, making lots of runs at several different RPMs and throttle openings, as Shade stated, his fantastic work does not sound any better than any other dyno tuner!

IMHO what you should look for in a dyno guy is the following -

A recomendation from somebody you trust who has actually used them and has had good service/after service from them!

Speak to them on the phone/in person/email and make sure you happy with thier attitude and thier knowledge in engine/tuning/business, (i say business because some people will be amazing tuners but uselss at business, they dont understand the importance of after service etc). Also, if you feel like they are rushing you or cant be bothered to answer your questions then steer clear

Finally thier workshop, a clean, well equipped workshop speaks volumes, are you really gonna let a guy near your bike when he cant even tidy the shit off his shop floor?

If you are happy with the guy and happy with his pricing then go for it
my guy had a decent workshop...lots going on in there, wasnt as tidy as I'd like but it was tidy as I'd keep it! The main thing was he was passionate about mapping. He basically LOVED mapping bikes and getting them as close to perfection as he could manage. He'd been doing it for years to his own bikes and others so had much experience and I love the way my bike fuels now. It really is a different bike. and I always thought some folk were exaggerating when they said that. Not bad for £150. He did it in less than 2 hours too but that was cos it was easily done. He let me stay in there with him and video it and take pictures the whole time.

I really enjoyed it.
My guy does what shade's does for each cylinder, It takes him a little over 1 hour because he is usually just adjusting for different fuels, exhaust changes, etc. return
This other guy you speak of sounds like he is just trying to explain why he doesn't have the same dyno as everyone else in the industry. return
I don't think that the other "typical" dynos are cheap, BTW. return
At the end of the day, it isn't rocket science. Getting a proper map on a "typical" dyno using o2 sensors is proper enough and works for a vast majority of the industry. return
Think about those guys running around with altered exhausts and intakes that DON'T remap!!! return

I absolutely can't wait for TJ's response (and no TJ, I am not taking the piss)
Who was that Shade?
I ask because I assume it was near us.

yep, he's the only one that knows about it. I bet he even offered you a special discounted rate for his premium services.
John, please don't get upset.
There are 3 things you should remember:

1 A certain amount of piss taking is inherent in this forum. I for one always assume you wouldn't purchase a superduke if you can't take a joke.

2 A lot of our members view the forum on laptop, some on hand held devices. This is the reason we appreciate that long posts are broken up with spaces between paragraphs. I'll be honest, if I'm going to go blind I've promised myself it's going to be over top notch porn, not a forum about underpowered motorcycles.

3 Everyone should do a good job of selling their services. I have no reason to doubt your guy is good at what he does, but is he significantly better than others - maybe, maybe not.
