#8joe wants an ipod, and i do wear ear plugs most of the time, i think thare is a advantage to not wearing them in town, i like to hear everything,
traffic and the like but on the highway i stick with ear plugs, music is a distraction in many unexpected instances,
hard to say, to hear or not to hear this is the question to ponder, not the long term effects as much as the fastly approaching fire truck or ambulance....

#9I concur that certain music makes you wanna ride faster (jeeze, don't try Rage Against the Machine..!), but surely the SD does that anyway... ipod, no ipod, earplugs, no earplugs..?
But my point is I think I can hear as much traffic noise over the music as I can when using ear plugs.
Is it legal though..?

#10I don't see any problems with the legality bud, thinking about how I learned to ride.
Instructor in communication with me through a radio and earpiece, so surely can't be illegal to listen to stuff whilst you ride?
I can still hear traffic, sirens and most importantly the bangs on the overrun over the music.
Bet the chavtastic brigade can't even hear their own flatulance over the subwoofers in their boot, let alone the engine or traffic.

#11I won't ride a street bike w/o earplugs! Dirt is a diff. story, not enough speed to need them.

#12Eear plugs for me ,Arai Astro-R, carnt do the musick thing when I am rideing my bikes I knoe how amp'd, I get when listerning to musick when I am snowbourding ,doing it on the bike wood get me into truble ,and I dont need musick to get me in the shit with this bike as it is , Rock on .

#14I wear ear plugs on long trips ,I have used walkman cassette on dirt bike and was ok (engine whine),we ran communicaters one year that sucked lots of what huh? wind noise and carpy music being picked up of the local radio , Now its hand signals (love the one for running out of fuel in the Duke hand to throat choking sign )as it has been said the bike even with ear plugs plays a nice melody .

#15I have an Arai Astro-R, so have to have the plugs in most of the time. Tried the iPod thing but found my riding, goes from Semi Sensible, to Absolute Mental, depending on the music. :twisted

#16I'm pretty concious of protecting my hearing because I work on jet aircraft all day long. I have some shure earphones too and I find them to be just as effective protecting my ears as normal earplugs are... (press stop to compare). With my mp3 player I set the volume to about 10% which is enough to hear the music clearly as well as a little environmental noise.
I only use earphones when I'm commuting to work though, all other times it's normal earplugs. I'm careful about what I put on my mp3 player too.... It certainly isn't the same playlist that I listen to running.
Disturbed = frequent 3rd gear standups... apparently.

#17About 10 years ago I found I had 60% hearing loss in my left ear and permanent tinnitus in both, put down to many years riding bikes before plugs were commonplace.
I use earplugs all the time now.
I listen to music (or audiobooks on a long motorway run) on the touring bike via the Zumo/Autocom, but not on the SD.
I like the engine noise too much.
Shoei XR1000 with Whisper Strip is a great lid. As Mel says much better than the noise generator that is the Corsair.

#18i learnt my lesson on the need for ear protection when i had a suzuki TLR with very very loud end cans. i have ridden with earplugs and with music earpieces and as much as i like listening to music, riding the roads today with some of these muppet car drivers
i need all the concentration i can muster to stay alive so i stick to the good old earpiece plus i enjoy the noise the aftermarket cans make.

#23Just posting this for info, Music venues had the law changed this month about noise exposure. Every 3dB is a doubling in volume energy and brings about a halving in safe exposure time (I think-from memory).

#30I wear earplugs everytime I ride - The Arai Corsair's are too noise not to. They're DIY custom earplugs and work very well, they are so comfortable that I can wear them all day.
I've even used them for long Haul flights to help me sleep - worked a treat!
