First ride on Superduke...my impression..

Just picked up my Superduke R with some minor upgrades this Monday and gave it my first real ride on this evening after the clouds cleared up. My first impression...let's just say I was a bit disappointed with the power delivery....but mind you, this is me coming off a Ducati 1098 Superbike (recently sold). I felt the same way though after I first rode the 1098 ..after a few modifications, it was a whole different riding experience, as I hope it will be with the Duke. On the Superduke, I found that power delivery was flat, and did not pull as hard as I expected. I was shifting way to often, as the revs came up very quickly. I'd hate to be shifting that many times on faster curves/turns. Just felt like it was not getting the most out of the motor's torque. I attribute this to the gearing (41t) that came with the bike. The set up is probaly more adaptive to supermoto type courses/roads (tight stuff). I'm geared more towards the fast corners and sweepers. So the top to my list of things to change is the rear sprocket, and to put the baffles in the Yoshi exhaust cans to spruce up the torque curve. I plan on doing a couple of trackdays in the upcoming months on tracks that have some speed (T-hill and Infineon). If anyone has any experience on these tracks, your set-up advise (gearing, tyres, damper setting, etc) would be greatly appreciated.
I'd go 17/40 on the sprockets. Fit a Motobox and get the bike dyno'd. This will give you the best results from your SDR. Is it a 2007 or 2008 onwards SDR?

Do all the mods makes a big difference but its not going to go like a 1098 as you cant beat more cubes

You bring up a good point about the sprockets... I have a 40t rear sprochet and I presume a 15 tooth front.. Although my bike feels a tad sluggish at times and I would love the extra torque I would get from a 40t rear... it feels like i'm already shifting all over the place..where do you find the balance btw ridability and torque????

I like you just got my duke.At first I was a little dissapointed.
After a few more rides I found where the power was it made all the differance.I read many threads on mods. One thing keep comming up
Motobox.I ordered one and installed it.
All I can say is wow This is the best mod you can do.It woke my bike up big time.I also went with FMF apex pipes. They are small and light. The sound is unreal from the motobox and the pipes.
You will love this mod.Plus you can get to things easy as well.Don't worry you will love this bike It is fun to ride.
Enjoy your duke I know I love mine.
I have tried 16/38 16/40 17/38/17/41 and I always ended back at 17/40. It's not so great in town but out on the twisties it's awesome It's also kinder on the chain being 17 at the front rather than 16. To really free up the engine a Motobox is the daddy in combo with those Yoshis. Mine went from 119 to 123.5bhp. Recently I whipped out the 2nd flies and fitted the full akra system. She then went to 129.43 She has done 40k miles though and the engine is nicely freed up now. Not bad for a 06 SD.
Does the 17/40 combo still pull wheelies?? I need all the help I can get..lol

Stock gearing is 16/38 for the 07 and 17/38 for previous models so you think that is already too short for road work in the UK?
I know multiple SD 07 and up riders in the netherlands that love the 16/40 and 41. They say even more wheelie power and they love the powerslides and wheelies coming out of corners
I've ridden one myself with around 130bhp and it didn't feel as if it was way too short, just loads of fun although it screamed experienced riders only

I've only ridden in the uk once with a completely different bike so I can't really say anything about that.

Then I guess it's a matter how you want to ride the bike and what fits your riding style better (not saying the taller gearing will be faster or slower, just a preference).
16:41 is extremely short, high revving, feels like a two stroke crosser. 16:38 has a slightly high first gear and requires some slipping, but far nicer when distance is being covered. 16:39 would be the best compromise I would think. I spend time switching between 38 and 40 but should invest in a 39 but haven't seen them around. Maybe 520 conversion and 16:39 when chain is due.

Just to let you know,
It dont really matter what colour the box is you cant see it when fitted.
Just my view but buy the motobox and support a KTM rider and forum member.
Good man. Aaron deserves all the business he can get. Top-notch products from a fellow KTM rider are tough to beat....

Plus, the fit & finish are second-to-none.
Personally, I go without flies. Get the box and secondary block offs and a custom map with Tune ECU or PCIII. If you thought it revved out fast before....

i owned an rsv mille with a few mods, got of the mille awesome motor and got a test ride on a standard sd no end cans nothing a few years ago and was quite suprised how gutless it felt, thought what was all the hype about went back 2 years later had another test on an sdr end cans and map, and ended up getting one a few months after I know what you mean about the torque I still think the mille had a better motor but the sdr ticks more boxes for me comfort is one of the main ones

Still waiting for my parts, but still riding regularly. Thought I give more input before the modifications. No matter how much I finesse the throttle, I cannot get through turns as smoothly as I would like..almost a jerking sensation with the most minor throttle inputs..it is very annoying. C'mon parts..where are you?! It was 88F degrees yesterday and my temp hit full bars and warning started flashing in stop n go traffic.. Coolant full, but looked a bit dirty. Gonna flush the cooling system as per forum suggestions..hope it works. Hope the upcoming modifications will transform the bucking bronco into more manageable.
If you use TuneECU you can set the fan to come one earlier...which might help.........This is speculation as the only time my temp would reach that high was if I put the bike in my oven.......

You lot are strange.

16:40 all the way. Add a motobox, tune for midrange and flat torque, sort the suspension (leave some dive in the front forks, for feel) ...and then

...Elbows up, weight forward & short-shift. Ride like a cock, and never look back.

if 16-40 is for Cocks what's 16-41 for . Cuz since i bumped the rev limit to 10.000 i'm thinkin next time i need chain/sprockets i'm gona go from current 16-40 to 16-41

....................Lights blue touch paper and retires

I think its gone out, maybe light it again?
I finally installed the Motobox...spent the majority or the time trying to get off..and on, the SAS bolt on the front cylinder..install was smooth otherwise. First ride after install was great. Throttle felt more crisp and revved up quickly. Went for a 5 hour ride in the Santa Cruz Hills and it felt great, especially in the tighter stuff..it just squirts off the corner and dives into the next. No hesitation or pops, so I assume the current map is pretty close. I will remap at a later date. Had a little drag race with a Honda CBR 600rr, he got the jump at the start and the Duke was able to keep up, but could not close the gap to pass..Damn..I was to busy shifting..had to shift every 10 meters cause reved up to fast. Sprocket just came in, so I will install and hope for the better. Gonna do a trackday next week, so the sprocket should help stretch the Duke's legs.

I definitely had to switch gears midway through the intersection we started at. I just mounted the rear sprocket last nite and commuted to work this AM. Acceleration is more linear now, and gets the most out of the motors torque...felt very "peaky" before. Mounted new fan switch with lower temp..old one was not turning on before bars hit the top...now stays in the middle. We'll see how the next drag race goes....
What gearing have you gone to now?
