Flies re-cap/update???

Hi All,

In a brown paper bag I have a lovely pair of brand new MotoHooligan oval secondary butterflies... but I'm yet to put them in...

My current setup (MH Airbox, Full Akra, and PC111) was dyno'd and tuned at PDQ at considerable expense, and I'm very happy with my 131 RWBHP, and the fuelling is "ok" (although not as smooth as my old sandard SD)... so I'm interested in trying them out, but also nervous about installing the flies in case it spoils my expensive set-up and ruins my flat torque curve.

Before I get the tools out (or before I get my dealer to get his tools out) can those of you who understand how these things work, and those of you with MH flies give me your thoughts...

Ta.
Have a look at this. (secondary flies... what? ) by Mrz32 in how to do it!

Cheers chap.

I posted on his thread, but to repeat myself (there's more traffic on this section), is he saying that having no secondary flies (with the MH box) is best of all?

To re-iterate; I'm happy with my power, but would love smoother low down fuelling.

I'm trying to avoid messing with throttle throttle cams, because on-track I'd prefer a fast overall throttle action (maybe even a faster turn), but I do find the bike lumpy to ride on town, and worse in North London on very bumpy roads where your wrists takes some of the bumps and this can throw the throttle around a little, leading to the odd kangaroo moment.

Will the MH Flies - or no flies at all - do this?
This is what I have been trying viewtopic.php?f=18&t=15076 It fixes the on off throttle over bumps. Actully it feels like a different bike.
Im looking to finding a hard plastic or thin metal sleeve. With the moto flies it will still be the same as no flies over bumps.
Hi Dutch.

I had the same dilemma as you when I got my flies through. I had a really smooth bike, dyno'd by HMRacing, lovely power and map curves, I was happy. So I didn't fit them until I ended up getting a full system exhaust and so I had to get a remap anyway so then I fitted them. I fitted the flies first and went out on a test run to see if I could feel any difference. To be honest I couldn't say that I could see any difference - not even sure what I was meant to feel as there wasn't a problem to solve. There's no way to know if it made any difference at all. But there was one big noticable change - when I fitted the Motobox a year or so ago I immediately started hearing the "twittering" sound, a lot of others on this forum have noticed this - it's a kind of high pitched warbling that comes from the throttle bodies - I think that it's more to do with the airbox gone and you hear stuff that before was muffled. Anyway, the modified flies immediately stopped this noise. I know that I'm not the only one to notice this, Klinky has had the same experience.

Anyway I had the bike remapped with a full Akra system and the flies and I gained about 6bhp but who knows which bit of that is to do with which bit. I don't know but the bike is even better now - those full systems seem to let the revs roll on much more and it pulls and pulls through the red line in every gear. Awesome. Maybe it's the flies? Fit them and see.

Hey LD,
I think if you can put more tention on the throttle it would work great.
Basically that's what I did with the sleeve, But just adjusting the cables only helps a little bit.
My thought is that the spring tention on the throttle bodies is a bit soft.
Go to a yamaha shop and check the throttle on a Fz or R1 you can tell its not as easy to turn as the SD.
Suzuki are easier to turn than yamaha but even the suzuki has more tention than the SD.
When I put the sleve on the SD and put a small amount of marine grease as it is sort of sticky I could ride slow or fast and it was like riding a different bike.
Even if you just try it for a short ride you will be suprised, So if you do try it make sure the throttle still turns easy and dont forget a little bit of grease I would like to see what your thoughts are after the ride.
Here is the thinking behind the flies, modified or removed.

The secondary fly systems main purpose is essentially to smooth out poor throttle inputs, it's the ecu keeping some of the control so if you give it too much throttle it still doesn't let everything in all at once like you've asked it to.

So Motos concept was to improve the airflow without completely eliminating the function of the flies, so with the reshaped design you'll get better airflow at all throttle openings up to wide open full throttle while maintaining a percentage of the ecu applied impairment so that the bike is still forgiving to incorrect inputs.

Removal of the flies is the all or nothing deal, it gives you the maximum airflow possible as only the rider operated primary flies will be in control so rightly or wrongly it will give you exactly what you ask it for.

Like you mine are sitting in a box doing nothing, I think I'm going to go for the no flies option first and if I then find I'm actually a ham fisted gibbon who needs some help then I'm gonna stick the secondary flies in, if not then all is good and I'll stick em up for sale.
Ok... I'm gonna try and the flies and see how it feels, and maybe get the best of both world's that MH were after - and if you don;t crash in a few months I'll then try none at all, LOL.

I will also look into different throttle setups, as I agree that other bikes I've owned have a firmer feel to the trottle. Maybe I can get a stiffer spring? Any thoughts on this?
I aggree with TJ about the function of the second flies, that is normally the case in bikes like the GSXR and so. This is also the reason I guess that moto came up with his design for them, which again makes sense if they do what they supposed to do.
With the SD I was reluctant to take them out for the same reason. Then I looked in the repair manual and it states the the secondary flies are for noise control only.
When I removed them the throttle response felt the same, maybe a bit more instant and the bike feels crisper.

My personal conclusion is that indeed in the SD the second flies are for noise only. A few people I know (MrZ32 included) removed them also and came to the same conclusion. With Tuneecu we can look at the function of the secondary flies and from that the graph is too crude to actually help the throttle.
