Fooking disaster! Think she's dropped a valve :(

Colonel_Klinck

Colonel_Klinck

Went out for a quick ride this morn. Got 10 mins from home, opened her up and she died No major noises that I heard but it was sudden. I have a slipper so no wheel locking up or anything silly like that. Lucky I do have one as I as in a right hand fast bend at the time and if she had locked it would have been very very nasty. Tried to start her and she refused to turn over. Called a cab, came home and collected her in the van. Decided to whip out the plugs and try and crank her by hand. Rear plug came out and my heart sank. This is what it looks like.

Something has hit it. I can't imagine the piston could actually come free in an instant and hit it so it's most likely dropped a valve. I hope it's not something I did last week, I didn't touch the valves at all. Fook knows how much damage its done on the inside. Going to have to strip the rear cylinder and have a look. Not what I need less than a week before the next race and am feeling very broke without this. Maybe I should have changed the valves when I had the heads ported and polished 8k miles ago. Too late now though. Will update when I've found out what's caused this.

Aaaa! It's just all that carbon you left behind on you last rebuid.
You know if you open the throttle more you would not have all the carbon build up.
A bud works on SAAbs. He has some old clients who bring thier car in to be decarbonized. He takes it out and runs the piss out of it, and all is better.

Pull the other plug and plug that bad hole to see if you still have compression.

Hoping for the best !

Maybe time for a spare motor to keep you on track.
Colonel_Klinck

Colonel_Klinck

Sorry to hear that.

Sadly I have seen this before.
What did you set the rev limiter to?
or
Are you absolutely SURE you got the timing right when you put it back together?
I have some spares that may be able to help you.

When is your next outing?
Sabre

I'm nearly at the point of dropping the engine forwArd again. Engine will turn backward so it's not crack or piston seized. Turning it forward it jams before TDC so there is something sat on the piston. When the exhaust came off it had some fine metal dust and shards in it which I'm guessing is off one of the valves.

Question is is it economical to repair? She has done 50k miles which means if I'm changing 1 valves I should probably do all 8. Plus i dont know the damage to piston or bore yet. That's not going to be cheap in parts. I could get a SD engine with about 25k miles on it for about £1000. Is that the way to go? Is £1000 for a 25k engine about right?

Rev limit was 9600. Yes timing was correct, she's been ridden for about 30 mins in total since putting her back together. If it was out I'd have know it a lot soonr than that.

Thats shit news mate........me i'd strip the engine down first and have a good look before jumping at a new/2nd hand engine, you just never know it may not be as expensive as first thought!

Gutted for you - never experienced a dropped valve but no noise?

Just skimmed back over your base gasket thread - given the greater cylinder wear for the rear, unlikely but maybe piston/piston ring related?

Holy shit, after all that work too klinck. Couldn't be at a worse time with crashfest coming up soon.

Looks like you'll be getting that 25k mile motor huh? Maybe you can keep the bottom end from this one and build it up?

What are your options?

Are you confident no metal shards went south past the piston?

That's a horrible sight, I'd say do some math and decide if you want to spend 1000 quids on an engine or if you can afford to buy another SD and sell the other one in parts.

One of my friends who ride up to Alices Restaurant blew up his CBR .... Went out and bought a new engine , and felt it was a better engine than his original.

Unfortunately though he was pullin out - checked left for oncoming traffic and struck a Harley that was pulling out on the right into his lane. Totaled the bike ( he's ok ) bought NEW bike (=

You'll figure things out....

That's bloody horrible!

As hard as it sounds i'd say this is your chance to get shot and buy a sportsbike.

You'll get a competitive 600 for that money. An there would be none of the faffing about the SD brings.

Just an option for the long game rather that the old heart strings pulling straight back to an SD.

Just sayin coz i remember you mentioning a move to a sportsbike was maybe in the future at some point. Would be the better and cheaper option in the long run. It's a tough one though dude. These SD's grab ya in. This is the 7th bike I've heard of that's shat itself. And you weren't even running a high rpm limit! I'm sticking to the stalker route on the motor after seeing this. Leaving it well alone and unopened and just changing oil and filters. 120 Dynopro bhp and cross my fingers!
Colonel_Klinck

Colonel_Klinck

Thing is I need a road and race/track bike. With this happening my dream of a track/race dedicated bike has probably died for a while I have no interest in riding a sports bike on the road, so I'm going to stick with the SD/R route.

ok 99% sure loan is in place so it looks like I'm buing Schnauzers SDR Can take the slipper, full system, race shift, motobox, dynamic precision rearsets and LSL flat bars off mine and straight on to it. Then just need to race prep her by thursday. Does anyone have the SDR tail section templates? I need to get a number printed up quickly.

Sounds like you've made a wise decision....a litle extra HP will help you out of the corners and down the straights a bit better.

Just take it easy on the first race weekend as it's essentially a new bike to you with suspensiion and chassis differences that'll take some sorting...your corner entry, mid corner and corner exit speeds will likely be slower until you get it dialed. You seem like a smart chap so I doubt you'll let the red-mist get the better of you.

Have fun on the new steed!

At a guess I think he will swap the sdr forks and shock from his SD to the sdr just if the Nichols type clamp will fit, prob need to use the 05 bottom yoke.

i wont match that with my 115.7 hp sd , have i mentioned i only have 115.7 hp
might as well just hand the crown over too
CEREC1

Well I'm adding moto box and full system so the map isn't going to be right at all. Not sure the power thing is going to come into this one bud I'll get John to do me a custom map when I get back from Oulton though.

Nice recovery CK. Man! A SDR ! How cool it that!

I want to appoligise for my harsh word, if you took them harsh. Kind of knew you serious hard parts problems.

I was trying to put a light hearted spin on a bad deal.

Got on e-bay looking for an engine for you.

Looks as if you landed upright on two feet.

Well done.

Cheers dude. Yeah it was a bit unlucky considering I'd just had the cylinders off and changed the timing chains. I was able to make the How to on it though.

SDR was indeed a massive silver lining. Hurt to make the purchase financially I can tell ya. Its a great deal though and a well looked after bike. Started stripping bits off last night and got the airbox off and Motobox fitted. I've managed to get Ronin's SDR map which matches bike and mods exactly and will do until I can get it up to Track Electronics after Oulton Park at the weekend. Be interesting to see how much grunt the SDR has compared to my 06.
