Fuel consumption and running out of fuel

#2Lots of variables when taking MPG. Took my totally stock '07 (USA model) for ride on Thursday. I averaged 40 MPG, but the only time I'm really on the gas is exiting corners or passing a flock of cages.
I'm one of the fortunate ones with perfect fueling and cruise at 60 in top gear.

#3Wait a minute. You're saying that you have a 4.86 gallon tank and you ran out of gas at 96 miles? Were you bangin' the limiter the whole way? Does that PC make your bike run really rich?
I'm asking because I'm seriously considering selling my Monster S4Rs for a SDR as the range of my bike is just not acceptable. My bike has a 3.6 gallon tank and I've run out of gas at 117 miles during some spirited riding, and slabbing to get to it. And when I went to fill it up it only took 3.2 gallons.
The throttle bodies on the SDR are 52mm to the 50mm bodies on my Duc. Surely that can't negate the bigger tank of the SDR in regard to range?

#9I've gone to 16/40 gearing and there is no difference in fuel consumption for me. I have standard cans on an 05 bike.
Fuel light comes on at 60-65 miles - Fill up at 100 miles. Although I have run out at 98 and 100 miles before. I put that down to it being winter and therefore colder.
