Garmin Zumo mounting

I have just bought a Garmin Zumo and mounted to my SD with the kit provided. It looks crap.

Plipton... I noticed your Garmin Zumo is mounted centrally on the handlebar close to the tank. How did you do that? did you buy another mount and if so where can I get one from.

I haven't e mailed you directly because I have a problem with my e mail at the moment.

If anyone else has any ideas please let me know

My new SD is fantastic, out tommorow doing more miles

I think Rick bought his mount from Bob Telfer.

Google "Telferizer" and you should get some results.

I bought mine from him anyways - though it isn't mounted on the SD.

I'm sure Mr. Plipton will correct me if I'm wrong.

Got my SD -07 last week (new owner).
i attached and Otterbox and a MIO A701 PDA/GPS, and use the extended battery 3000mah, gps works with max brightness etc for 10+hours(never tested longer than that).
The good thing about an PDA/GPS is that i have tomtom/miomap/navigon etc all installed.

here is a pic ,have not removed the protective film from the protective glass on this pic =) ,never use the protective glass on the road bike =),

I posted some photos of the GPS attachment for my 990. I just drilled out the steering stem nut above the triple clamp and bolted the ball mount on top of it. The photo shows my Garmin 60 csx. My wife has a Zumo that I'll put on in a couple of days and post photos.

Thnx Plipton, that gives a better view.

You used one of the handlebar bolts to mount the ball. When I look at the RAM Mount stuff and cradle that comes with it, this must put the Zumo some 3 inches above the handlebar bolts?



@Kengray: That is a neat way to mount the ball. Clever one. Have you tried the Zumo with the RAM stuff on your bike yet? When I was 'fitting' the Zumo at the shop I couldn't get it on the right spot and angle above the handlebar bolts when I tried it on an imaginary ball fixed on the front tank bolt. That's close to where you have it. This was because of the odd shape of the Zumo cradle and offset bolt holes.

No plans to sell. I'd like to keep things a little exclusive... We've got 5 sets made. For me and some mates to fit on a 950 ADVs and a 950 SMR. Maybe one kit will be left over.

Dunno what the metal shop will charge yet. Won't be earthshaking I think (I hope )

Nice to meet you this morning and many thanks for the 07 demo .

The tank and bar bolts on the SD are the same diameter (8mm) so if you get a RAM from Bob Telfer ask for a 50mm bolt length and cut it down to suit. Email him a pic just to be safe though.

You are welcome to try mine on your bike - it will hold the tank down (about 5 turns of thread) but ideally would be longer. Worth a try if you have 5 minutes spare!

Just for the sake of passing information on; I've just taken delivery of a replacement bike mount for the Zumo. I had lots of problems with water ingress on our recent European trip, i.e. water got into the USB connector under the Zumo. This meant taking the cradle off the bike and drying it in a rest stop hand dryer.

After that, the music & directions sometimes only came out of the r/h speaker, whilst Autocom chatter was in both.

The original is now behaving itself, so I have a cradle for both bikes.

My bolt/RAM ball arrived from Telfer and I've fitted it in place of the tank bolt :

It makes the Quest fitment very neat but was a bit fiddly to screw on the final bit,as there is very little room to get a spanner in to tighten the bolt without knocking the tank.

Also,I'm not mega impressed with Telfer's bit.

The quality could be better-it was very difficult to get the thread to match and £30 for a ram ball and bolt and a little ally spacer seems pricey.

The metal is quite soft and rounded off a tad when tightening.

And PDQ will need to remove it when they set up the PC III on the dyno !
