gas tank leak - relly getting sick of this!

#2Mine didn't do this. But what it did do was that the captured nut in the tank started turning so that I couldn't undo the bolt - couldn't remove the spoiler - couldn't get to the oil filler cap - couldn't top up the oil - on the morning of a track day! I was so mad, this was the second time it had done this so I had to hack saw through the bolt - took a long time so as not to damage anything else. Now I do not use these fixing points.
Maybe your nut has turned and ripped open a small hole?
It is one of the small bad things about this bike, along with the front tank bolt holes not aligning, the seat lock and the pip squeak horn.

#3I have heard something that maybe the cause of the problem. The 2 bolts that attach the shroud at the bottom are different lengths. If you screw the longer into the shroud/tank fitting it can damage the tank and cause a leak.
Personally I have fitted the wrong screw in bolt in the past but its not been a problem but I remember someone telling me this. Hope this isn't the case for you dude.

#15Stratkat, the fuel tank leak is no more then a pain in the back side but easy to fix.
You might be able to fix this with the tank still on the bike. All I did is cover the edges on the metal screw 'socket' with epoxy resin which did the trick. As it is quite thick it should stick. Alternatively you could take the fuel tank off and fix it that way. I did take it off, poured some loc-tit 243 around the edges (to be sure, to be sure) and covered off any gaps with epxoy resin that way. No leaks since and this was done more then over a year ago.

#17Ah, a warranty job - I should have asked about the warranty.
Mine was out of warranty when it happend so I fixed it myself.
But you are right - it's ludicrous to think that this happens so easily. I mean it's something that gets loosed and tighten on a regular basis (every serivce at least) so you'd think it would be more robust especially as the construction has been in use for a number of years now.
Leaking petrol and a hot engine is a bad combo! Although I have not heard of any SD's going up in flames (yet?)

#18Am I understanding this right? Merely over tighening a bolt holding the shroud to the tank can cause a fuel leak? I'm pretty good about properly torquing bolts but I do these by feel. How sensitive is it to being over tighened I wonder?

#19It would be the 44-45 bolts - the ones that go into the bottom of the tank at the back of the shrouds. I haven't heard of the 40's causing problems.
I did hear of leakages near the fuel pump due to overtightening.
It's fairly easy to do. I did not torque the bolts just had tightened them with a small allen key.
