#14Connect a voltmeter to the bike electrical system. The easiest is probably the ACC connectors, use the one that is always on. Measure the voltage, it should be round the 12 V mark. Turn on the key, the voltage should drop a bit due to the fact that the headlight comes on. If it is below 11 the battery is clapped out or needs charging. Start the bike and the voltage should go up over 13V.
These are rough estimates and can vary a bit depending on the state of the bat and so but are in the ballpark and give you an idea what is going on. If you have a meter which can do ohm test also the generator. Undo the flat brown plug with 3 wires that come out of the top of the generator cover. (on the battery box side attached to the lid) Measure in between the 3 wires and the resistance should be the same when you measure in between wire 1-2, 1-3, 2-3.

#15Here is a good guide to testing >
Straight forward to change, chin spoiler off, two bolts hold reg/rec on, undo alternator connector, loom connector and connector to battery. Then just unthread wires and remove.
Takes about 15mins and then 15mins to clean your hands if your bike is as dirty as mine.
I would check the wire that goes to the battery as this seems fragile and tends to rub on the battery case.
A battery in good condition should show over 13v (engine off and ignition off) and not the 12v mentioned above, as the SD has a gel battery.
