Heavier fly wheel?

Hi,

I note the new RC8 has a heavier fly wheel and this is given as the major reason for it's far smoother throttle response, as one of the major issues with the SD is the snatchy throttle could it be feasable to design and have made a heavier flywheel for the existing SD engine or would this cause other issues?
I had a Honda VTR 1000 that had a heavy flywheel and the net result was a bike that was very hard to control on braking into a turn. This was way before the days of slipper clutch installations. The typers for moto mags raved on about the very light flywheel on the SD. Me thinks you need to look toward a back torque limiting clutch and stay away from the heavy flywhhel aproach that farm tractors have been built on since the steam engine. Evolve.

Yeah got a motobox, smoothed the throttle out quite a bit but hardly butter, saw no horsepower gain up top only in mid range.
I'm with you CJ. I own the 08 SDR. I think a few oz would not hurt at all. I have done all of the modes. I had the throttle tube with the 400 cam. this did not help. I now have .50 cam in there and like it better. Got my bike remapped w Power commanded installed. removed all of the smog. One of the things that helps a lot is getting the tps sensore adjusted correctly. All that being said. It's still a sensitive beast. But I still like it.

One of the thing that's I have wonder about. Is if ktm used different flywheel's on different models of the 990 motor. I use to ride my friends 950 adventure bike which had carbs and was very smooth on and of the gas. Maybe this was due to the carbs. maybe not. Not sure. But I still willing to bet that it had a heaver flywheel just the same. Again I don't think it need much. But I think it would help to have a few oz when you are leaned over in a turn.

if you are worried about throttle snatch then you are not riding an sd the way it is intended.

if you want a big heavy flywheel get a harley mate... when you kane these bikes they are superb.

I have spead my throttle cam up, lowered gearing, mapping, o2 eliminator, termi pipes and motobox, yes it gets annoyed at times when pottering around but is generally pretty good... if you are having problems, try looking at getting your TPS sensor just perfect (thread I did around here somewhere in the tune ecu topic) and balancing your throttle bodies.

getting your tps will make a huge difference to your bike

fix the symptoms, dont mask them
Have 02 eliminators and have had it dynotuned throttle bodies have been balanced. So if the light weight flywheel is so great why have ktm gone with a heavier one on the new RC8R? Lets face it most KTM road bikes up until the new RC8R have been routinely caned in the biking press for their rough throttle response, KTM go with a heavier flywheel in the new RC8R and the concensus is that the problem is now solved, obviously the KTM engineers saw a problem and have fixed it on the new bike what is wrong with investigating it as a retrofit to existing ktm vtwins if you are not happy as many aren't with the way the bike delivers its power?

Guys I don't buy the yeah the throttle is shit but that makes me a better rider argument, I am not asking for traction control here just for throttle response that doesn't cause the chassis to lurch when I smoothly apply it, do you really think you would hear 90% of racers canvasing the logic you have here I seriously doubt it. You can go and say that I have shit throttle control if you like and I know part of the lurching issue is suspension related the fact is that I know I am a alot better track rider than the S1000, R1, GSXR and blade punters I was running away from the weekend before last, I will be heading to the track this weekend and will run in the fast intermediates at a power track on a bike with no fairing and 110 hp no this does not make me a superstar but it entitles me to think that I have some idea on how to punt a bike round a track, the point is I know I could be faster with a smoother throttle and if a smoother throttle will make me faster then I want a smoother throttle. I think the mistake alot of you guys are making here is thinking that having a butter throttle will completely change the character of the LC8 engine this is wrong imo.
And don't get me started on how sh1t the thing is to ride on the road, fair dinkum I still haven't worked out how to get it to work properly, I would piss all over the thing on a twisty bumpy road on my old TL1000S with a bitubo in the back and lets face it they were hardly noted for their great handling. Fact is the thing is so dissapointing to ride on the road I am turning it into a track bike, despite this I still love it, it looks and sounds awesome and as many of you have stated it has character I just wish it didn't have so many rough edges.
Seems to me you're not looking for an opinion, but rather for someone to reiterate yours. If you feel the bike isn't up to par, by all means, go ahead and make the modification.

I wouldn't bet money on it making the bike better in any way, shape or form, but in the end it's your bike, so..

KTM engineers are not the fastest in improving things.. Just look at the original airbox what is came from the old LC8 950 (carburetor) engines.. The ECU / O2 sensors / regulations are all responsible for the snatchiness and the Akra mappings (which are for racers) are still suffering from snatchiness..

I love the bike but cruising in a city is a suicide on a snatchy SD (like mine)

I just not feel the Ready to Race philosophy, why they can not improving things on the bike?
