So I received my 08 SDR here in FL, shipped from CA on Monday - yet the key was not sent out by them on time... Sent on Tuesday.. and not next day like they promised. Received key today.. and guess what? The battery was DEAD. Thanks again.

I go buy a battery to replace, and it is really trying to crank, but will NOT START..

I'm not sure if I have tried to start it too much and it is flooded or if I should wait a bit... as the bike was in an A/C'd area until a few minutes ago.

I just really want the bike to start... sigh.

What else can I do?... I think the bike hasn't been run in a little bit and that might be it?

Thank YOU
I'm going to try to bump start it...

Any other suggestions?
Is your fuel pump primeing?

Is the bike new or used?

Mr. Obvious here, make sure there's fuel in the tank.

May have fouled the plugs.
Kill switch?
USED.

Any way to deduce it's the plugs without digging all the way in?....

Bike was JUST shipped to me from Del Amo Motorsports in Redondo Beach, CA. I would think they would start a bike before shipping it... wow.

Kill switch is covered,It does have gas.. although who knows if it's been sitting and for how long, judging that the battery was totally dead.

It is puffing a bit out of the exhaust on normal start/cranking...

But on a few push starts it would not even attempt to crank but one time.

Any help appreciated MUCH.
"I go buy a battery to replace, and it is really trying to crank, but will NOT START.."

WTF. Really trying to crank? Is the motor turning over fast and not firing? Or is the motor trying to turn over but is really slow to spin. The speedo is equiped with fault codes that you read and then find the magic decoder list in the manual which will tell you what your problem is. Look for a dead short. That might be why you think you need a new battery. Don't toss the old one out yet. There is a real mess of wires that live down next to the battry.

A friends dad flies out to Oregon to fish the Great Pacific Nortwest and brings his fishing poles in a crush proof case. He gets here in Oregon and some frinkin' A H got in his case and broke all the tips of the poles.

You just might be jassed up to ride. Other stuff: SIde stand switch. Tip over switch. Kill Switch again. Er, that would be on the right side of the handel bar next to the loud handle. Clutch safety switch. Netural switch. Go have a beer and look at it tomorrow. Been in AC too long?
I read somewhere that if the battery is not fully charge, it may turn the engine but it will not start.
I guess that is something to do with not enough juicy for the ECU..
I'll help but first you need to chill out! I know easier said than done I would be pissed too!!!!

1- charge the battery, make sure it's fine.
2-when batt charged switch on the key and listen for the fuel pump to prime, if it doesn't we know it's that.
3-If ok crank it without touching the trottle, it should kick in after a few spins...
4-if not check the following:
Are the spark plug connectors all the way in? (coil packs)
Open the big grey connector and check for moisture, if there is clean out and dry, if you have dielectric grease apply.
Look for big grey connector on here, plenty of people had issues with it, the treads will explain where to find it.

If this doesn't work work up an healty anger and ring the dealer....

Hope this helps!
Bummer dude. Del Amo is 2 miles from my house and I won't even shop there....bunch of fooking idiots, literally.

Hope you get it sorted.

John
Sorry, really trying to *fire up*. It is spinning fast and not firing..

Also, Fuel pump does prime.
Tip over and side-stand switch wold not even allow the bike to attempt to start though right?

No error codes that I am seeing on the dash.. but is Fuel Injection? LIGHT supposed to be ON when holding starter?

Wondering if it could be spark plugs or something... and also they had a gas overflow from heat when they shipped the bike... possible relation?

Bike started before they shipped it.
Mate. Check the petrol. Maybe put fresh in the tank. If the bike has been stored for a long time then the fuel does degrade.
Just a thought! But doesn't the SDR have a immobiliser? The key that they sent you could be the wrong one or maybe it has to be coded to the ignition switch? KTM Guy would know if this is right or not.
Forgive me if this is stating the obvious but mine will not fire if you touch the throttle at all. If you twist even a little it behaves exactly as you describe.

Just switch on and push the starter without touching the throttle. See if that solves it.

Good luck!
I just found this by Twistered jester in 09.

Easy way to tell if the immobiliser is on is if your clocks don't start up fully when you turn the ignition on, as in do the self test type thing as that won't kick in until the immobiliser is disabled.
One other thing might be the fuel line quick release connector on the left back side of fuel tank might not be plugged in. Might have been disconnect for transport?
Only problem I`ve had with a good battery was the tilt switch after having the headlight shell open when trying to start. Probably not that but...
It's not the immobilizer, as the gauges function normally.

Also, I am not touching the throttle at all when starting.

Haven't been able to check plugs.. or coil packs. Not sure what the coil packs are, tried searching for pictures and a guide.. Any guides on spark plugs on here? Thinking they may be wet/flooded?

And can't seem to see/find the Big Grey Connector? Do I need to remove tank for this?...

Thanks again.
EMPTY the fuel tank completely and re-fill it with fresh fuel.. (It may still take some cranking until all of the old fuel is gone, but the fresh stuff can only help the situation) Also make sure that they didn't put something in the pipes when they shipped the bike.. (I have seen folks plug the pipes for shipping and I PROMISE you it won't start with plugged exhaust pipes)
To get to the BGC you do indeed need to lift the tank. You can also then access the rear coil pack (fires the spark through spark plug) and spark plug. You will need a thin walled socket to remove the spark plug. Its a very tight fit and a normal spark plug socket will not go down there. The front plug is a proper pain in the arse to get to. One of the advantages of fitting a Motobox is that it makes the whole of the top of the engine far easier to work on. That however is not want you want to hear right now. To get to the front plug the whole airbox has to come off. This is a pain in the arse so I would check other things first. If the rear spark is firing then she would at least try to start on turning over. I'd put fresh fuel in and a good squirt of WD40 into the BGC, dry out and dielectric grease that baby up.
simplest things first... you have power, starter turns, fuel pump primes. if you believe the dealer that the bike run before shipping (a big IF here...), the fuel should be ok, same for plugs. might not be top shape, but should still start... check if the sparkplug 'wires' are on the plugs tight, this is something that could have easily came loose in transport. Coils are actually the black 'sticks' that plug onto the spark plugs. If the bike has stock airbox, getting to them is a bit of a pain...

is the bike stock? does it have PowerCommander?
also, the FI light should NOT be on... does it stay on, or just on when cranking?
Too get to Grey plug lift tank and remove radiator overflow tank it sits behind there. Also with electrical stuff you are better off using isopropyl alcohol this stuff is used on circuit boards as it dries out quickly and doesn't leave any residue then once dry put dieletric grease.
But if this doesn't work it may be the side stand switch.
side-stand switch, if faulty, will still let you start the bike in neutral, then kill it as soon as you go into gear, and if you are in gear, it will not let the bike crank at all...
I spoke to the person I have delt with through this entire process and he personally started the bike before it was loaded, assured me beyond recognition that it started fine.

They said to bring it to KTM dealer and we can go from there once the problem is established/fixed...
So that would explain why when plugging the hoses together... it spat gas all over when I turned the ignition on...

BUT my question is: Why did the bike arrive with the connection severed, in fact, the plastic connector which joins them is broken and TAPED separately to the lower tubing...

I actually noticed this when I received the bike and looked it over...

Parts manual says they are this:

CLUTCH CPC BLACK 05
PLUG CPC BLACK 05
Pass, (without pics)

I know US bikes have a few extra emissions bits, evap can or sommat.

So can you connect the hoses together or not?

You are in nuetral arnt you?
The plastic connector is broken where it sits in the tubing, it's sheared.

I tried connecting them and taping them but the plastic on the lower end of the connector is severed so it broke loose with the pressure.

I may be able to fabricate something that will stay together, maybe..

How hard will it be to get a replacement?
That sounds like your issue mate no fuel getting to tank, you must have been pissing fuel everywhere? once you get the connector sorted it will start hopefully.

Hmm, I'm hoping this is it. This would explain some of the additional gas I found on the side of the left bike when it was delivered (besides fuel tank expansion.. which is what I thought it was as it seemed gas was coming form the tank, but it could have been coming from below as well and wouldn't have noticed.

But the shipping company wouldn't have put electrical tape on the severed connector... could this really have broken in shipping?
Part number 21 is what you posted up, part number 22 is what it needs connecting to. Im presuming part 22 is broken.

http://www.bikersjersey.com/Product/Pro ... model=3130

Yes, everytime the bike primes, thats the noise of the fuel pump pushing fuel through and why you had a pool of it if it was not connected.

No idea how it was shipped to see if it was the shipping company or the sender that may have broken it.
Pic ADDED of the part which is broken...

So this undoubtedly would not allow the bike to start...?
"Wondering if it could be spark plugs or something... and also they had a gas overflow from heat when they shipped the bike... possible relation?"

My guess: Shippers had to deal with the gas over flow problem and some ham fist decided to yank the tank to dump the gas, most likly in his pick-um-up truck. They have dead lines to meet and are usually not the sharpest tools in the shed. Me thinks you should take the bike to the best KTM shop around for repair and have the bill sent to the ham fist owner.
Yup, a 'quck-connect' connector on the fuel line!
the hose should be running from the gas tank to the TB's, with the connector roughly in the middle. it's broken (the connector), so there is your problem. no worries, it's not a serious issue, but you should probably sent those pics to the dealer, and ask them to pay for a new one...
I'd love to know how the fook that got broken in transit?? Was it in a crate? There aren't any marks anywhere on the bike like she took a tumble are there? If not then it must have left the dealers like it. Your lucky it wasn't pissing fuel everywhere under pressure. I'd be demanding new parts and the labour to fit it.
It was not in a crate.. but it was supposed to be.

Are there any other brand's quick connectors that will work, from other bikes, etc.

Trying to sort this for the weekend.

THX
Mine would not start day after i picked it up from Garage brand new.

There had it back and told me it was the solinoid bolt was not done up they said it was 4 threads from coming undone works fine now.

All i had done was put a optimizer on the battery and after that it would crank over well but not fire?

Hope this helps
Bash you may have saved me.. BMW dealer not too far, goin to check now...
And then... IT RAN.

Will update more details onfirst rIDE soon.

Thanks all!!!!
Without looking through entire thread.
I would bet my pay check he didn't start it. Why would he tell the truth? This IS California.
California fuel can goofy in a month and turn to full varnish in less than three. Draining gas in my carb'ed bikes ismandatory. I took a CF tube the diameter of an arrow, .5 meters long and attached it to siphon. The SD will hold over 3 liters of unusable fuel.
Good luck.Sorry you had to buy a used bike from a dealer. I have rarely heard of those deals being successful.
Once again, welcome and lean heavy on this forum. Good blokes all! And a few girls as well!

Way to go AGRO! for the closest diagnosis. Now who ownes the ham fist?

You win... a high five

Thanks to all once again - only a couple more minor problems now... but bike is running well.

Getting the suspension sorted and dialed. Still need to write a review/impression article which I will do SOON!
So who screw your bike up
BMW motorcycles, not cars.

And Paul, thanks for the heads up, although this is a CPC connector and is pretty much identical in every way except for being metal to the KTM one. Operates the same in ever way and was a perfect replacement at half the price, while not being plastic!

It has worked flawlessly. And definitely no problem getting fuel even under hard loads.

Also, I think I may have solved the gas cap venting problem, with removing a gasket in the cap (that I read someone did on here and solved that same issue). Bike is sitting outside in the sun now so I will find out if it really works... although the tank isn't completely full either.

Only problem left is the headlight not functioning, and it may be just the bulb - will find out soon when I get one to try.
