It'd be rude not to post these

Nipped out the night before Oulton and snaped some quick action shots for the album. Yep, i 've only got jeans on, but it was a spur of the moment thing and couldn't be arsed to suit up

Yet more blatand whorage, but hey, thats what the bike is all about. Never had a bike before that makes that little devil come out on my shoulder so much.

Looks like a good time

Who took the pictures?
One of my buddies. Was staying with a him in Manchester for the night before heading to the trackday on the wed.

Saw he had some fancy ass looking camera so asked if he wanted to snap a few shots. Not the best, but he captured the image and didn't chop my head off or blur them to bad.
Nice bit of mono wheeling............thats one thing I can't do, but to be honest I'd rather not attempt......I rather keep my wheels on the deck and enjoy the twisties....

The only time the front wheel comes off the deck with me is under real hard acceleration and then it's only skipping the ground....

Quick action throttle makes it nearly Compulsory ....though to be honest not that high
It costs too much if it go's tit's up........ which it would if I tried..... thats why I don't bother rather leave it to people who can....
Those who can, do. Those who can't, watch. I like to watch

I'd love to wheelie...if I could. Well the front wheel came up once on accident but I haven't been able to replicate it yet. Loved the zero gravity feel of it though. I've been struggling to do it but it hasn't happened yet.

2 reasons: for one, I'm half chicken-shit. I really don't want to crash my bike. The other reason is that I can't seem to focus on a single technique. I have some people say:

"Try power wheelie's if you're new to it! You don't have to worry about clutching up too hard/fast so it's more controlled than clutch ups!"

Or

"Try clutch ups if you're new to it! You don't have to worry about going a million mph by the time your wheel comes up so it's more controlled than power wheelies!"

Now it seems both arguments have me spooked. I have a lot of mods done to my bike so I don't trust 1st gear for power wheelie's, and I also have a G2 Quick Action throttle so I don't trust my right hand to stay steady while slipping the clutch. I've tried nailing it at X RPM's like a lot of people have suggested but nothing happens except the bike just hauls ass. My feeble attempts at slipping the clutch have just caused the bike to lurch forward. Any advice (speed, RPM's, throttle, clutch, etc) would be greatly appreciated.

Back to the thread, that's probably one of the SICKEST wheelies I've seen. Definitely hope to be able to wheelie like that one day. Until then I'd be content with just being able to get the wheel up a bit on command lol
No need to clutch wheelie an SD, just twist the throttle a bit. Front tyre comes right up.
Sitting upright…not hunched over the tank Accelerating part throttle (smaller opening the better) 5500rpm shut off and instant…. bang full throttle (aggressive actions)

......some people have anti wheelie software installed in brain...it will not let them twist the throttle fast enough…and the speed of the twist is the key

....er.....second gear or third gear is best.....things happen a lot slower…….and contrary to belief the faster you are going the more stable it is

On a big twin shutting off the throttle will bring the front back down….or a touch of the rear brake
Hands off the front brake completely......try not to Comfort touch the front brake as you want the front wheel spinning ......for stability and touch down ….and funnily enough it does not work anyway

………this will prevent lock up on landing (which is very often the reason you see people binning it on landing)
I posted some advice for THEDUKE a while back when he was learning. To save me typing it all out again i'll fire up the link. I stuck to my thoughts on there and just go for a more height and try and hold a constant (ish) speed through the wheelie. Not really tried to go up the gears again. I wanna be able to hold it smooth, wee twist on the bars and relax enough so i can look the the side or try and take my left hand off and give a thumbs up. Typing that out it feels like it will never happen, but noticed my posts in the thread were in July and it's only 2months on and they've got loads higher and smoother already.

All the wheelies in the pics above were in 1st gear and clutched up. 2nd is way smoother coz your traveling faster. You can see in one of the pics the bike is falling to the side a bit. It will do this sometimes in 1st gear high ones and it kinda wobbles an weaves left to right coz it's not traveling fast enough.

I've moved to 16/40 gearing now, changed to this for the track but it's helped the wheelies too. 1st gear is now pretty sensitive now though. On track i can get more drive out the corners by using a gear higher in some turns than before. On 16/38 the bike was running out of puff a bit at the top of 4th and thats when the 1000cc I4's were getting going. Feels much more alive now without feeling like its short geared. Saying that though, i dont use the bike on the motorway, it's just a wheelie/track slag. I keep it clean/polished and a few times a week i'm checking/adjusting and going over things, so it's well maintained and cared for.

In the 1st two pics, that still isn't nearly flipping, it can go bit higher than that. The balance point isnt a point it's more like a wide "V" shape.

These pics look ok, but dont get me wrong guys i aint no wheelie guru at all. Still got loads to learn. I love this bike and dont wanna crash it either, but in the pics it wasn't near flipping or feeling like i was gonna crash. It's all about air time. You have to spend time gradually building up the height then eventually you'll become relaxed at that height. Kinda like just pushing your comfore zone bit by bit so a wheelie is well within it and your relaxed and in control.
Awesome pics viking!

It's cool to hear that the balls to wheelie don't go hand in hand (figuratively) with mad track/street riding skills, not that I have either. i always thought i was the only one on a SD to have an actual fear of lofting the front. Also given my prior riding hx (all heavy sport tourers) wheelies just weren't in my vocab.

I've gotten more comfortable with the feeling of being on the back wheel, but since I don't go out for dedicated "wheelie practice" and only try a handful at "safe" times on various rides, I'm having a hard time being consistent. Every wheelie I've done feels sig different from the last....sometimes the grade or crest of the road makes it eerily easy, other times it feels like gravity just says "not this time." I've only managed to catch 2nd from 1st and ride it for ~100m just a few days ago, was a great smooth feeling but I was surprised in how low the front wheel seemed....didn't visually appear to be balance point, but my butt said otherwise.

i'm just not consistent yet and not experienced enough to have my brain automatically tell me what is normal.

Would love to have this kind of control (old vid repost I'm sure)
Today I've made some wheelie's on my new Superduke, trying to get the feeling. I've had a KTM LC-4 SM, wich I could wheelie off the trottle in 2e gear, change gear without clutch to 3, and stay there for a while. My last bike, a Bandit 12, wheelied of the trottle in 1st, change to 2nd.
The Superduke came up rather viciously, of the trottle in 1st. I was really surprised. I know clutching up is the preffered method, but I'am not familiar with that.
Does the Superduke wheelies of the trottle in 2nd gear?
Yes mate, it will wheelie off the throttle in the 1st 3 gears no probs. I use he clutch because I feel more comfortable with it, plenty guys out there do well just lifting in on the throttle though.

This video is awesome! They way the duke pulls away........
