How bad is reckless driving on your record?

So I just got pulled over by a cop today doing 83 in a 55 (even though traffic around me was doing at least 70). Of course I got hit with reckless driving. I'm 22, in the military, already pay a little less than $2K a year for insurance, and have had a perfectly clean record before this. My car is insured with Gieco so this is my first policy with Progressive (a few months shy of a year old policy). How badly am I screwed?

I think you need to find an attorney. Fight the ticket to get the points reduced. The fine you'll probably be stuck with but the points are going to cost you for years. At least that would be the case in the NY/NJ region.

I really couldn't care less about the money portion, money isn't a big deal to me (unless it gets ridiculous). My biggest problems are that my court date is 3 days before I fly to Germany to see my parents (I was just informed that if the reckless driving charge sticks, I may do some jail time) and I also need to maintain a secret level security clearance which could be botched by a criminal offense (reckless driving). Has me pretty worried so any advice would be great. I really didn't think it could do this much damage to me.

I've sweet talked myself out of speeding tickets before...but those cops didn't try to run me off the road, point a gun at me, and put me in cuffs on the spot...

Ok, I'll let you in on the secret - its all about the money. (I actually heard a criminal judge announce that from the bench once. Remarkably, his last name was Law. Not so remarkably, he's no longer a sitting judge. But I digress ....)

The system is designed to penalize you. If you hire a lawyer, that costs you money and that's part of the penalty. Hiring a lawyer also shows the judge you are acting responsibly and taking the charge seriously. I don't know what jurisdiction you are in, I've heard horror stories about certain VA courts, but in CA its unlikely you'd receive ACTUAL jail time for reckless driving with no accident or injuries. It would be more likely that if you receive jail time, it could be served as community service - picking up trash on the freeway or mopping floors in the morgue. But, again, that is something your lawyer can arrange for you.

So, that's my advice. Don't discuss the details on the internet and hire a lawyer. Good luck.

Edit: Why did you go with Progressive? I'm an old fart but I'm only paying around $440 / year for full coverage (comp/collision/um $100/300K limits) for my SD with Geico. Progressive wanted a fortune.

I have no idea about the whole lawsuit thing, but HOLY CR*P insurance is pricey overthere!

Tell me about it. The sad part is I already checked with all the other insurance companies and Progressive was definitely the cheapest.

No idea why. I had NOTHING on my driving record at the time, and I've never committed a crime or anything like that. I told them it would be kept in a private parking garage under 24 hour surveillance, that I had taken a motorcycle safety course, and that this was not my first bike. My best friend pays something like $500 a year for his Honda 919, although he's married and 26 with a kid. But still $2K?

I got popped for 100mph in a 65 zone. a lawyer cost $350 more than the ticket but they got the case dismissed.

Reviving an old post. Went to court today with my lawyer. I was deemed guilty of reckless driving. $285 fine, no jail time, no license suspension. Turned out great EXCEPT that I still got charged with reckless driving, so my insurance is going to sky rocket I'm sure. Oh well. I'm just glad I didn't have to do any time.

Lost my date after in/near the restroom..How..???? I to this day I do not know..
Crossed a cone 15 minutes from home..(she wascrying and angry) Cops saw me do it..Pulled me over..and I was barely over the legal limit..
Got a Dui..went to jail..The girl was drunker than me and they left her waiting in a BAD neigborhood to wait for a ride home..Truck impounded.$350.00
Lawyer..got it dropped to a wet wreckless..1st offense..
HAD..a class A license for work..Suspended for 1 year..
Still paying for it..Insurance tripled..
Lawyers fees were $3000..Fortunately for me I just needed a class C for work..
I just quit drinking all together...Can't afford to suffer the concequences again..
Probably rough estimate..Cost me about $15K..
Just isn't worth it..

Got popped for drinking under age so they suspended my driving liceses. Was back in the woods with my buds no where near a car or bike. Up went my insurance 4x. Ask around. I think if you can take some driving classes that might remove some of the bad points. Got any cop friends? They should know. They do come in handy.
