HP pipes and sound. Help needed.

Hi friends,

I just my new HP mufflers and installed them on my SD. I got the 300mm model with SPS Corse end caps. They are the best looking pipes for the SD bare non IMHO. They look awesome and fit very well with the bike's lokks. They were also easy to install and fit very well.

I'm still running with the stock maping. Will get the Akra soon. On my first ride with these pipes I got a second gear wheelie on gas only which is a first for me and this bike. Maybe it was the cold air...

I got them with what is supposed to be a new DB killer.

Problem is I don't like the sound. Without the DB killers they sound awesome but man are they ever loud? They almost hurt your ears with the engine just idling.

With the DB killers in the sound level is better but they sound aweful. It's like they take out all the low frequencies and let the highs through. The result is a high pitched sound that's so bad that I think it's the worst sound I have ever heard coming from a V twin.

When riding around town I short shift as much as possible to keep the revs and the sound level as low as possible. Not because it's loud but because it sounds ridiculous.

I was wondering, does anybody else own these pipes and could you share your experience with me?

I suppose my only way out is to either sell the pipes or try to come up with a modified set of DB killers that would sound better without beeing too loud.

Maybe the previous version of the DB killers weren't so bad, I don't know.

Can anybody help me with this?

I have the leo's and have about the same complaint, my thought was to remove the db busters and alter the leading tip where it will allow some of the centre exhaust (low sound) to make it through. do you get my meaning? I have been thinking on this for quite a while and just needed to see someone else with the same complaint, thank you, that was a great exsplaination of my problem. by alter I mean to drill 1/2 or 13 mm holes into the dead center of the cone. make sense? or maybe even bigger?

If I understand you correctly, yours end with a cone on the "front" side?

Mine has a flat plate attached at about 1/2" from the pipe. I can send you a picture if you give me your email.

I don't know if adding aa hole in that plate would work. I'm afraid of adding holes in the DB killer just to gradually get closer to the "open" sound meaning louder each time until I get the the same level of sound as the open pipes. Also, here the police have a habit of giving a ticket for pipes that have nothing in the way of the exhaust gases. They stick a rod into the pipes and if nothing stops it they give you a ticket. For that reason I kinda like having that plate in there.

I think I will try to get other DB killers fabricated so I can experiment without destroying the originals.

Well, I can certainly see why people can not understand me after reading this thread.

One point not made here with all the science, is the uneven surfaces throughout the exhaust system, not to mention the Y part of the pipe that would have the pulses trying to travel in other ways that interfier with the OUT direction, much less...the turns and bends that have to be considered ?

also to conclude, I have noticed the front cylinder where the header pipe sraightens out has a dimple in it that is about the size of one half the volume of an average size male thumb? anyone seen it ?
