Knee down for sure. Plus boots are more expensive than knee sliders.

Knee down. Leg out on a surface that won't move out of the way (a bit anyway) like dirt, is asking for trouble.
oi
Knee out, unless you're on a true SM or dirt bike (or binning it).

Foot out when stopped.
What about really tight hairpins? I've tried to hang off in those kind of corners but it just doesn't work to well. The speed is too low...and it just feels weird . Would SM style be a better technique?
You cannot "hang off" unless you're carrying speed/momentum. Slow speed corners are tough to master - you either back it in, square it off and go, or slow way down, roll around, and go WFO until the next turn. This is, of course, track talk; hanging your knee down on public roadways is asking for a knee replacement (or worse).

Anyone who sticks their leg out on a superduke, wants it ripping off and beating to death with the soggy end. Someone posted a Youtube video of some wanker doing just that, looked nearly as bad as a touring screen.
