LED Strip work around to Akra Evo + Evotech Tailtidy problem

When I recently fitted the Akra Evos to my SD I found that my indicators no longer fitted. In fact my only choice was either seriously modding my Evotech tailtidy or swapping it for another brand that would allow indicators to fit around the Evos

Anyway I noticed Samba had used a LED strip system on his single seat and as I had some orange LED strips in the pits, I decided to see where they would fit. As it turns out they fit perfectly between the plastic under tray and the rear light lens I'm pretty pleased with the result and they are def very visable which has to be a good thing safety wise. Whether they are legal is another matter entirely Any ideas Superdan?? I might pop down to my MOT guy and ask what he thinks. Although thye look a bit red in the vid they are def very orange. KTM orange you might say

Cant see the video as it says it is private but it looks like you have solved the Evo's or indicators choice when fitting a tail tidy. Less to break when you run up the back of someone too

Technically you dont need indicators on a bike, you can use arm signals (still in the highway code if you take a look)

As long as its orange, flashes at the correct speed and is visible you should not have any issues.

Not too sure on the legality. I think there is a set minimum distance between the the two rear indicators as all those integrated rear lights with indicators are illegal.

when I was reading up about the integrated unit, I thought their illegality was a bit of a grey area, as it depended on perception. It was something like the indies have to be clearly visible when braking, which, errr...they aren't. The tail light kind of overpowers the indies....

LED's are comming of age. I have been watching thier use for 20 some years. Things to watch for: They are very directional. That is they don't work very well from the side view. Up to date car manufactures get around this with the use of a reflector. I was wanting to buy a led tail light, installed it on my Bandit and it was not as bright as stock. Reason being it was not making use of the reflector. Another placement for your leds might be on the ends of your license plate. Our plates are smaller than euros. I mounted a license plate turn indicator kit on my ST4S Duck, and asked a worker M8 what he thought about my new turn signels as they were on and we were standing at the back of the bike. His comment: What turn signels? Ya, they might look cool, but .....if some one rear ends you and the court said your binker are crap...

Doug might be right you know.... and I should probably be duty-bound to have told you this already clinky, but my girlfriend was following me home one day and said my LED strip indies were shit - she could barely see them flashing. I got (and still do get) pissed off and told her she was wrong... but I suppose Doug's point might actually apply here...?

My mate Simmo has integrated flashes in his taillight, and they are pretty invisible. It's just about ok if you're looking out for them, but they don't catch your eye in the way seperate indies do. I'd guess they're better at night too.

They look cool though. Just be religeous about doing lifesavers on right turns and you'll be fine.

As for legality, from all I've read on forums and links to MOT sites, you don't have to have indies to pass an MOT but if you have the switchgear or flashers they must work and conform. I have taken bikes through MOTs without indies, but I had to tape up the switchgear to get the pass.
There has been talk of minimal distances, etc, but I've not seen that verified. At the end of the day, do what you like, but use your loaf if they're hard to see.

Ok did another quick vid, was filmed on shitty iphone 3gs so camera is not great. Anyway first is direct bright sunlight onto rear of bike. Then with brake light on. Could be better visibility wise.
Next just daylight from rear and then pan round side. Shows the LEDs are pretty good from all angles. Distance is pretty good too. last with brake light on again in normal daylight.
