Motorcycle Noise Restriction Bylaw

Hello Everyone!

For my fist post, I'd like to share something with you all.

I picked up my '07 SD two weeks ago ( I'm definitely hooked...can't put it away ). The previous owner fitted it with the lovely FMF Apex Carbons. I love the look and sound, but as others have mentioned in the past, these puppies bark loud.

For the last month, the talk of the town where I live has been a new Motorcycle Noise Restriction Bylaw that the city of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada is implementing. Apparently, this bylaw is the first of it's kind in North America. Right now, it's only affecting our city, but folks are saying that other governments in Canada or elsewhere in the world may use it as a benchmark in the future.

If you wanna read up on it, here's a few links:

In short, the noise level is tested by a reader placed 50cm from the exhaust, at a 45 degree angle off to the side of the bike. The test is done in two parts: at idle, no bike can be louder than 92 decibels. Bikes with less than 3 cylinders, can be no louder than 96 db at 2k RPM, while 3 cylinders or more can be no louder than 100db at 5k RPM.

For a first time offence, a $250.00 fine is issued, however, fines increase with each subsequent offense up to and including $10,000.00 and mandatory court appearances.

Over the weekend, the Edmonton Police have held sessions where bikers were invited to show up and have their exhaust tested.

I had the SD tested today and it registered at 91.5 at idle and 95.5 at 2k RPM...barely made it.

For a few weeks, I've been worried about having to part with the Apex, but no longer. I shouldn't have any issues, but I'm sure I'll be getting pulled over here and there because the police will want to see if the bike is up to snuff.

If anyone is thinking of the FMF carbons for their SD, those are the numbers that the exhaust produces. Another fellow told me that his '08 SDR with Arko ( no baffles ) passed as well, but I'm not sure of his numbers.

Cheers!
