New 07 SD -- questions, maybe problems.

Two things. The first thing that has me a tad concerned is that there seems to be a significant amount of vacuum build-up in the fuel tank. I noticed it at first when I stopped for fuel, as I opened the fuel-door it took a bit of force (didn't just swing right open effortlessly) once it did crack open I heard a wooshing sound of air rushing into the tank. On a separate occasion I noticed that there is enough vacuum in there to actually "suck-in" the tank walls which noticeably expands when the fuel-door is opened.

Is that right? Do I have a vent that isn't functioning properly? As far as I can tell, it isn't causing any fuelling problems or anything. Bike starts and runs fine, has no stalling issues at all.

Secondly, and i'm fairly certain this is a problem (albeit minor) -- It seems that after a night of sitting (completely cooling down to room temp) in the morning when I start it, it weeps some coolant. Not alot, and I only notice the smell on the very first start when dead cold in the morning. Not ever after that throughout the day. For instance, I get to work around 10am, and the bike is off/untouched till 6-7pm. I don't notice it weeping/smelling of coolant while warming up or riding home at any point. Seems only after sitting all night.

As best I can tell, the coolant seems to be being burnt on the front header right at the bend underneath the battery tray/front spoiler. I can see drip marks on the pipe there.

Just curious. I'm new to KTM street-bikes, and my SD only has just under 1k miles. I believe it's done both of these things since the beginning. I do have warranty and all that, but before I go droppin er' off at the shop again, i'd like to know i'm not off my rocker

It sounds like you have a vacuum issue with the tank. When the tank has been raised, sometimes the vacuum/drain lines get pinched when it is lowered. I would raise it and make sure the lines are not pinched and are clear of obstructions (pull them off the elbows at the tank and blow into them).

Not sure about the coolant. Sounds like you have a leak that you should track down and fix. Has the level in the radiator or overflow tank changed?

I'm no mechanic, but I had the tank vent issue. Hope that helps.

Yeah, good to know i'm not alone on the tank/vacuum issue. I have yet to pop the tank up, but will do asap. I'm wanting to think you're right on the money with that. I believe I notice the most vacuum in the tank when I go through a tank relatively quickly as compared to just commuting to and from work throughout the week where there is several hours gap between when fuel is consumed. It is probably venting, just very slowly. Likely a pinched or obstructed vent as you suggest. Thanks!

As far as the coolant leak goes.. Its not leaking in any significant amount for sure. What with it being new and all, it shouldn't have ANY coolant leak, and that fix should be covered under warranty. However, with its promiscuous nature (only happens like once a day on cold/morning start) I'd like to have a decent idea of the source of the leak before handing it over to the shop. I can't imagine them wanting to spend a bunch of time tracing down this tiny leak. Especially if its warranty work and not cold hard cash.

Makes sense to me. If you haven't lifted the tank before, you might search for threads that include the terms tank and bolt and your favorite swear words. Sometimes it's a pain to get the bolt back in as the tank seems to shift or change size. In my experience, if I don't leave it up too long I don't have trouble.

Well, the tank i'm sure has been lifted before. Its had it's 600 mile service which includes a valve check (or should have) but I think I recall this happening both before and after that service. I'm hoping that its just a coincidence that the vacuum tube was pinched in the same way after the shop lifted the tank. Else something else could be the problem. Hopefully not though
