I want
22bhp............
Motohooligan has some competition!

The stage 3 with the extra filter in the lid looks proper mad! Be interesting to see what these retail for.
Yes love to see how they back up the claimed power gains!!

On the other hand should be as good as the MH box without the f.....g Paypal/ Customs hassle!!!
Motoholigan

.....looks like its time to launch the 'High Dome' MK2 lid.....that just bolts on to the Old base...........that you must be working on

I think you might have a few takers.....

.
yep looking at these DNA models I bet the MK2 with the high domed lid gives the best overall gains

22bhp?! does it come with a free turbo also?

I like the idea of the mark 3 version with the air filter on top. Clever.
This does look awesome but price may be prohibitive? The nearest and only stage2/3 filter for sale on the DNA website is for a Yamaha XT660 and it's 525 Euro so Motohooligan's will still win on price I think.

Still they may surprise us on price
Id like to see MH upgrade his as stated above however it does not sound like he has much free time these days.

What BHP increase do you get from the MH box? 7-8bhp at most? I cant really see the extra bit of air filter giving and extra 14 ponies.

I think this wont be cheap at all.

IMO I think these quoted power gains are just worked out from flow bench gains, ie they are hypothetical flow based power increases,
We need to wait to see them tested on an engine to see what difference they really make,
My money is on the MK2 being the best on the SD
It claims on that other thread that they're all dyno tested but until we see real world results it's always an unknown.

Seeing as how much DNA filters on their own cost for the Superduke I don't imagine it's gonna be cheap.

Funny how a company like this has suddenly decided to do something like this, with barely anyone even bothering to make filters for the superduke you can't help but wonder if they've been following the motobox movement. Not that it's a revolutionary idea of course as air filters have been sandwiched between two plates for years on many applications, not just bikes but still, interesting that they've come out with this now.

If the dyno figures are correct It would be awesome if MH was able to re-engineer his lid as an add on for existing motobox users.
He,he, the Greeks are in the shit they must be looking for every little hole to make some money
I did try the link earlier, blocked in from China!!! can you post it up?
Thats it at the top

I have it in pdf PM me with your email and I will send to you
Well now that I am on my break... Last exam for a few months done, my next task (after the dvs which is almost there) was to design a new airbox... Basically going to make an air box that will take up all the free room under the tank, up to the ecu through to the back to where the sas was as well as almost touching the frame rails and the underside of the tank.

Looking at using some form of expands foam.... Then will get it built out of carbon fibre.. Will let you know how Indy and I progress on that one
22HP? theyre having a laugh arnt they

That farty bit of filter in the lid aint gonna make that much diffrence!

Shame about the colour too. Price will be a deciding factor for most and more competition means companies/people will have to keep prices a little lower - keeping the customer happy
The hope then is to have enough room for a better lip design of the velocity stacks and the possibility of variable length intakes running off the secondary fly system... Hence you could then use tune ecu to physically change the intake length depending on rpm... Stealing a bit of a design from mazdas shell styled variable length intake design

yes.....still 131bhp on a SD though
he,he, I better try one then, I have 127bhp with the standard airbox
That really good...........Whats different apart from Full Akras?
Very interesting development. I believe the extra height is great but since there's already loads of filter area I doubt if the stage 3 will be any better then the stage 2, there's only so much the engine can handle...
Full Akra system and the old DNA airfilter, stuck a set of new iridium plugs in, went with 9s,
127.3 SAE on a fairly warm day 23c.
oops forgot, baffles in! just a run to check the fueling and power, no time to play
Im at 122.3 and 76fllb Half Akras and Motoholigan & removed Flies and Shaft but......

it was 115.7 and 70ftlbs before i did Motoholigan & removed Flies and Shaft ..same dyno

It's interesting, on my XT, I had the DNA stage II filter, which was basically just a replacement for the side wall of the airbox (so 2 minute install, screw the cover off, screw in the new). The difference with stock was amazing. Not so much increase (never cared too much about a couple of ponies at the top end), but the bike suddenly became a lot smoother and easier to ride.
When I got the SD, about a year ago, I contacted them asking if they would be interested in doing something similar for the SD, but never had any reply.

Sorry if this has been beaten to death--is there a "How to" regarding secondary removals? What do you guys (I am in USA) do to plug shaft holes? Has this been dynoed before and after? I am custom mapped--remap called for?

Thanks!
Dome good.

I just did a school trackday. I cut holes in the front of the top rad cover to let air through the front onto the airbox. I think made a difference. I would like to dyno my bike to see what it's got now.

Suspension on smooth track was magic.

used a bit of oil, is that a worry?

I am not sure on the gains as well, in the past I have done comparison dyno runs with DNA's filters & their dyno runs are usually close to actual, at least we have something else to look forward to. I believe they will be released any day now.
Thanks Klink. More a light spanking. Rained a bit in the middle and I was quite wuss. The SD does get a caning down the straights

Was the HP different on the dyno, with secondary flies or without?

I've got my doubts as well but will hold judgement until someone on this forum buys one and gets it dynoed.

I was a little concerned when Moto sent me a shorter shaft to use with the K&N filter as opposed to the Fram in the Motobox...it was a 1/4 to 3/8 inch shorter (if memory serves) to facilitate the shorter K&N. I knew this would bring the top of the airbox closer to the intake trumpets but it didn't seem to make a difference so wasn't too worried about it.

If DNA's claims prove to be the truth I may look into getting a taller K&N and fabbing up a longer shaft. Will have to check clearances as I don't want the airbox to wear a hole in the fuel tank. That would be bad.

The claims are always claims and never proven fact. How often is a new bike released with a "claimed BHP/top speed/..." and the reality never reaches the marketing hype. Many have already said it just doesn't make sense that amount of hp gain for a little extra air filter. I'm more than happy with my MH airbox and won't be rushing out to get this DNA airbox unless it is proven to give such a massive gain as the marketing has said. Well even then i'm still more than happy with my MH airbox.

I log on here and see the same discussion by new members about airflow and liberating power over and over again.

When I first discovered Superduke.net I'd been riding about on my '07 bike for nearly two years with only engine mod being a set of slip on Akras and the factory map, (installed from new when I bought it so never experienced the standard exhaust or power delivery.) My first thoughts were, "Wow, I can't believe there is so much debate and experimentation about the fueling and breathing on this bike!" There are threads and threads going back for years - this is what got me into the site in the first place. What I did was to get a bottle of wine and go back to the beginning and read the threads - right back to the days of the "Marbox" and the guy who originally developed a better filter and how eventually Aaron developed the Motobox. You'll aslo get to know the guy called, Dr.F and see why he's honoured with a thread title in the technical section. Anyone who takes the time and effort to do this will appreciate the past time and effort that so many SD enthusiasts have invested and what has gone into getting to the state of play we are now in. It makes for a great read - and there are some great characters and discussions.

Doing this might also help appreciate that the Motobox, (as DRSWade rightly point out) is a product developed, tested and manufactured by genuine fans of the SD and this forum - and that this new DNA product is more or less a blatant copy that capitalises on work done by others. As a product designer by profession, I look at their offering and my intuition says that this is a company who has done very little original R&D of their own to develop this further. If Aaron had a design registration he could probably sue - but he won't have and he's a small player and DNA are bigger, and that's how the world works unfortunately. The best way to discourage blatant copying is to choose to buy the genuine product and send your cash to the people who deserve it more. I would leave that decision up to your conscience.

On the power claims issue. What is very clear to me is that improving airflow is never done in isolation. It would be silly to do any work on aspiration without combining it with exhaust mods of some kind. And that is what everyone does. I've never heard of anyone dyno testing a standard SD engine with a Motobox without also doing one or all of the other mods that also contribute to HP and torque gains. And as others have mentioned, many of the benefits of doing all this work is smoother throttle at low revs, cleaner fueling etc, not just top end power - it's not the holy grail for many. And IMHO the difference in inherent BHP that individual SD engines deliver combined with the massive discrepancy between different dyno equipment means that bragging about extreme dyno figures is pretty much irrelevant.

Also, anyone who has bought a Motobox knows the feeling when you unwrap that CNCd top cover and appreciate the quality and workmanship. They are really lovely.

That DNA product looks really cheap and shit in orange!
Great reply to a subject I'm following but yet to spend hard earned money on. To go to the trouble of writing a response early on a Sunday morning when there must be other disractions suggests it's written with passion and knowledge.
I applaud you sir and if money gets spent in this household it will go to the enthusiast not the opportunists!
Bic

I'm with you 100% .......I dont think anybody has written anything to the contrary on this tread......If anything I have written gives/indicates any other opinion than I will state right now this was not the intention

I have Motohooligan box and its a shame to hide it under the tank......(I have dynoed it before and after on the same dyno.....7bhp and 6ftlbs torque up from 5000 to 9500) and I am more than happy

I was flagging up whats happening with new kit......and maybe it was time for Aron to think about Mk2 Motohooligan (Which would look very similar....I expect ) IF the sales data proved correct
While I agree with most regarding the MH box, there is an issue with it (at least in Sweden). It is, sadly, too loud for track use. And seeing how I spend most time on the bike on the track, it's never been a viable option for me. I gladly buy other stuff from him though.

Bic * 2. Buy the proper stuff.

About the quality and influence of the site - I think people have mentioned here before as well, manufacturers do take note of forums like this, I guess particularly with KTM which has small sales and with lots of those people contributing here - if they like the demographic. I used to use a triumph forum and a landrover one and heard that they were both reviewed by the manufacturers, the Landy one mainly to note manufacturing faults, hah.
I think its nice to have a choice!
Come on chaps this is the real world, every good idea gets copied or developed from and we get more choice, business gets more competitive which is the only thing that drives people to new ideas, we all want new things, better than we have now,
Where did the SD come from..... a totally new concept in motorcycles? no its a development from something similar that came before it!
We all have a choice how to spend our money and which company to support but we all want the best product for our money dont we,
Now if the DNA airbox outperforms the MH, people will buy it and MH will have to think about developing a stage 2 box, Competition is good!
DNA will have spent some time and money on developing this (we would hope!) So i dont think they would bring out a product that is not in some way better than what is available, I think their advertising is a little misleading and overstated, but that maybe confidence in their new product (I hope it is!)

Personally I have always thought the MH box is too short, the filter should be higher and the lid more domed, I dont argue that it works I just look at it, how close the lid is to the end of the bellmouths and the space under the tank and think mmm, that could be better...
So why not wait and see

Depends on the diameter of the DNA filter.
Just curious about the above equation.
Wouldn't it be 1000cc x 10,000 rpm equal 5,000 liters of air since it take two complete revolutions of the crankshaft of a four stroke motor th complete one cycle?
This one has me second guessing myself.
Im just wondering if that will add up to 22hp
I cn not deny that restricting air flow into a pump is detrimental to total performance. There are manufactures of products that help the system breath. Monkey wrenching on your hooligan steed is part an parcel what this site is about.
I have found that we have taken this discussion into the morals category and out of the aire flow arena that it originally started at.

You can not deny that to many hard working stiffs, getting five bags of cheap chinese knock off shit is better than getting one bag of quality crafted hand built shit.
DNA uses the pricing of a small beutique machine shop to justify pricing on thier product and laughs all the way to the bank.
It is up to individuals to reward behavior that feels most becoming to its nieghbors.
I have not ventured into the nth degree of performance gains and have been tickled pink over the SD in slip on and akra mapping upgrades. I do not fault nor think that diving deep into performance for performance sake is a bad thing, I just am fully pleased with the machine how it stands now.

Here in America, it is my belief that WE fooked up by chasing the five bags of shit. Buy American, I need to build houses, stores, and banks for my nieghbor Aaron.
He,he, from airflow to morals and now to supporting the American economy!
Even the Chinese have been dragged in now!
Conspiracy theory? DNA is based in Greece but fronted by the Chinese government to undermine the US economy even further by selling knock off motorcycle air filters......

What we really need in EU is cheaper airbox made of materials like thermoplastics or fiberglass. This airbox could use fram ca315 or other similar existing car filter. Using CNC and high grade aluminium alloy does not improve the performance - it only increases manufacturing costs.

If Mr. Motohooligan wants to increase sales numbers I would suggest finding loyal partner in EU to avoid these ridiculous tolls/taxes.

Using plastics and a mould is too expensive unless well over 1000 units because of the pricy mould...
I am ordering a CNC mill today so maybe I will map out a MH box, fab up and offer them up here for $150 for all of you here that don't share in the moral dilemma.

Just kidding Aaron! Not in a million years!

I am ordering a mill though......
I just saw the dealer pricing on these... I think Aaron is safe...
From ADV rider forum:

MK1 raw alum 435$ anodised 510$. MK2 anodised all colours 610$. MK3 anodised all colours with the extra top filter, 700$ shipping is extra. delivery appox 1 month. www.alternatecycle.com send any deposits to alternatecycle@ hotmail.com

$700 is 440GBP and it will probably cost more here anyway, 500 sheets I bet.

The whole thing with the power claim is the same as any other manufacturer claims. DNA is saying their airbox adds up to 22 bhp. Now if you install it and gain 6 bhp, then he's still covered because that was a gain of up to 22 bhp. The AEM cold air intake for my RX8 claims up to 12 bhp...I probably picked up 4. But this is how companies attract attention to their products without stepping over the legal line.

As for me, I just ordered my Motohooligan kit today
Good choice.

I love my MH box and would buy from Aaron again if I needed another one.

I like the idea about dealing with a real person. Arron always is very quick to reply on email. Pricing is fair and shipment is quick. Only complain from me is the slow custom clearance. But that is hardly Arron's fault
Over priced, knock-off piece of shit.

how does it run? been on a dyno?
I contacted DNA for some answers, their reply below now makes more sense.

I have good news, next week we will ship your DNA KTM S3.

Today we completed the first production series for the MK1 and MK3 and attached you can find the first official photos of the MK1 & MK2 S3 anodised orange.

Also following some points that are useful if people ask questions:
• The DNA S3 uses a purpose designed DNA filter that is larger than the Motohooligan, even the MK1.
• The MK1 S3 is taller than the Motohooligan, not to mention the MK2 / MK3 that have a massive difference compared to MH.
• If used on the KTM Adventure 990 the MK3 compared to the MK1, will make a difference but in no case can it produce +22hp
• +22hp is the increase we registered on a highly modified SuperDuke (complete Akrapovic evolution exhaust, cams, ported head, Dynojet Tuning link mapping, etc.) using the MK3.
Any other combination, including the MH or no air box at all reduced the power!
• In NO CASE the DNA S3 modification should be used without adjusting the fuel injection! Custom mapping is recommended.
• For extreme off road use we are preparing a pre-filter that will allow the user to temporary clean it in 1 minute without using tools. This will be useful if the lower bottom air box is removed.
• In some Adventure 990 the bottom air box can stay in place in some no, it must be removed. This is due to large tolerance we found between various bikes.

I hope the above info will help you answer questions.

Man they do look good.

I think what there basickly saying is that an SD with the full system the cam's ported heads and there mk3 filter made 22bhp over a stock SD. Personally I don't think that's a huge gain to what the MH box can make.

And as for there remake stating that the MH box will decrease power the same as removing the air box is a complete load of shit! Lol

Personaly I think DNA have made a bit of a mistake. They've obviously blatently copied a design from an enthusiast (who also happenes to be a machinist) that was/is doing the SD fraternity a favor in manufacturing a quality product, at an unbelievably low price point, that we all need. They are charging close to twice the money for a knock-off (IMHO) that they've obviously gone into pseudo mass production on (realitively speaking) for an already saturated finite market. Everyone who's serious about their bikes performance already has a Motobox and KTM are not making many more of the LC8 configured bikes.

Unless the 2012 SDs use the same TB layout, I think you'll be seeing DNA execute a price drop in the not too distant future.

Oh, by the way, that 22hp (by their own admission) is on a heavily modified SD, not soley on the merits of their airbox as I suggested in a previous post. If the Motobox did lose power as they claim, I can't imagine it was more than 1-2hp on their highly modified test mule.

John
Hey ho we will soon know the answers!

I am still not sure about the MK3 with the filter in the top though

It looks pretty - and I expect it'll work very well, but the MH is much better value for money...

But who are we to complain? ...If DNA wanna copy MH that's very flattering, and validates all their hard work (...and may even boost interest and sales for MH) ...and for those that can afford the extra cash for a bit more air volume and orange anodising, then that's fine. Each to their own, and Viva la difference, and all that.
Could be Aarron makes up his own stage three lid,,,,,eh Aarron,,,,,, kinda an easy add on wouldn't you say,,,,, make mine black please,,,,,,,,,
