New Tuono 160 BHP I don't think so

Gday,

Have recently gone up against a couple of new tuonos on the track and to tell you the truth if I had just bought one I would be more than a little dissapointed, my 05 SD dynos at 111hp and the new tuono barely pulls on me down the straights I dont know if these are new bikes that are still tight but I would have expected to be soundly trounced.
TBF mate if you can ride a bit, you'll trounce a tuono.

IME it's a case of the SD getting the power down so much earlier.

I passed superdan on his too-homo at Cadwell and there is no doubt he can ride, but I could see that I was winding the throttle on a lot sooner than him !

However full marks to you for showing yet more people that they bought the wrong bike !!
Superdan had the old twin Tuono that was only about 120bhp at best, whereas this post is about the v4 Tuono that is claimed at 160bhp. I doubt it has that but it must have 30+bhp on most Superdukes.

Jody is right though the rider is usually what makes the difference. Perhaps the Tuono's you saw were ridden by Freestyler and Danno?
Bet they were gay traction control jobbies
The RSV4 is a rocketship - I'd at least expect the new naked to be on the same page.
that makes those two riders arsetronauts then
Id expect the V4 to trounce the SD, it does 170mph and dont think its been de tuned either.

However its all about the rider ultimately.

......and yeah the SD was no faster than the old Tuono, I was regualarly getting trounced by em at last years crashfest and I was redlining it every gear on the straights and there was not much in it apart from brakes and coming out the corners.
To be fair Dan, had you been as comfortable and confident on the Tuono as you had been on your SD I think it would have been even.

I passed you at the end of the Park straight and everytime it was because I was a bit earlier on the gas out of Charlies. Add to that that I'm a bit more aerodynamic and you see the bikes being very close.

I'm pleased because for years I've been saying the suppose power advantage of the Aprillia is nothing.

The new Tuono however is a different story.

We all know it's the rider that makes the difference on the track and road, that's why I got trounced by a few of you at crashfest on my rc8.

However before I bought the 8 I rode the tuono, tbh I would have bought one if I could have afforded it. They are truly rapid!
Gday,

Despite your corner exit speed if a K5+ Gix, 07+ R1, blade, beemer opens the taps they are soon pulling big wads of ground off you, if you can pull up alongside a new tuono on corner exit and he only creeps away on a 700+ metre straight either the bikes engine is still very tight or they aren't anywhere as powerful as they claim. I spoke with one V4 tuono owner at a trackday 6 weeks ago and he asked me if my SD had had engine work done on it as he wasn't making much ground in a straight line.
What group ability wise did this take place in.

I know this sounds strange but some riders don't open the throttle WTO even on the straights.
6 weeks ago fast, yesterday fast inters until my water pump shaft seal crapped itself.
Could it be that even though the Tuono has a 30+hp advantage that the aerodynamic drag of naked bikes makes it only marginally faster than the Super Duke in the straights?

its mostly going to be down to the rider and the laws of physics..........

More power means more speed down the straights but then more time on the brakes, you cant use all that power on corner exit either........

The effect of all this is tiring on the rider,

Unless you have got really long straights that extra 30bhp is not going to be any advantage

Paul I did think of your bike when my water pump crapped itself at QR on saturday
I agree it does look better in the flesh, I have seen alot of them slowly pulling away from my SD down straights.

Have to admit that I really wanted to like this bike. The white one that appeared in MCN spy photos back in late 09 looked brilliant. Unfortunately the finished product looks like crap in photos (haven't seen one in person yet).

Suprising that the Italian's cocked this one up. They are usually very adept at making anything look good.

I've ridden the V4R Tuono and IMO it has the SD beaten like a red-headed step child
Its so much faster and handles considerably better out of the box - much more front end confidence.
Is it worth 12 grand?
I wouldn't feel happy going to track days with a £12000 bike.
Couple of years time I'd have a look at one against street fightering an RC8R but there's no way I'm going on track with a bike that owes me more than £6k.
How can people seriously be saying that the SD can match the V4 Tuono.

You've a bike that had a tweek in '08 from a '05 design going up against cutting edge superbike technology that has hardly been touched when they took off the fairings. It's a no-brainer.

But even with the obvious performance disadvantage, I'd still choose the SD as prefer the looks and never go on track so all that extra power will be wasted on the open road (try not to go on the "open" road as it's boring and tend to go for the twisties which would negate the extra power anyway )
Yes , for roads only its` a bit overkill but Unbeliveble fun And this thing works on the highway too .

For me its the ultimate bike! really nice for road use , and cheap insurance , and at track ...you have to have an big superbike to beat it

Well , Drive safe superdukers and we all hope 2013 Sd will be somthing special !!

Cya .
Gotta say I'm having a hard time waiting for the 2013 SD. I'm ready for a new bike. This (4 years) is the longest I've ever owned a bike. While a great bike, time has marched on and there are definitely better choices available now (depending on what you want to pay) and I'm starting to get a little impatient. KTM had better start leaking some info soon or I might just head down to my local Aprilia dealer to take a spin on a TV4R ASPC demo (available in March).

By all accounts (several ride reviews out there from Europe) this bike rocks on the track and is just as good on the street. And, I have to say it sounds brilliant...at least on the videos I've watched. I prefer the sound of a twin but could learn to live with a V4.

Now, just have to figure out what to do about that fooking ugly front end.

I think you have seemed to miss the point... We are not talking about the theoretical advantage of an extra 30hp... He was just saying how surprised he was at how little a ground that the aprilia made on him down the straights (which is where you would expect to be slaughtered).

I don't think he ever said that the said better... Its just closer than we realise

Aprilia have only ever made one good looking bike, the RS250, everything else since has been an ugly jumble of parts and weird styling,
Dont buy one you will only encourage them
The first looks as if it got it's styling cues from a Ducati Diablome...don't like.

The second version...WINNER!

The third....fugly!

Looking at MR Z232's post does not give me much conifidence KTM are going to get the new SD right asthetically. The italians had the perfect artist's conception to shoot for (second photo above) and gave us the bike in the bottom photo??? WTF? Speaking stricktly front and sides, that pipe looks a bit rubbish.

KTM have the perfect artist's conception from the French but I wouldn't be surprised if they go their own way and cock it up.

I really hope I'm wrong on this.
I have always loved ape's I really think they make some bad ass bikes. The problem is the lack of any kind of dealer network.I only know two that know what they sell .AF1 in Texas and a shop in Washington state. If you live near those guys you are golden.Otherwise your fooked I had my DD for a year and it spent 6 months in the shop at 4 differant dealers. All for the same problem.I sold it after the last dealer said it was fixed.I loved the bike they are fun and have a look that I still miss When I had mine you could not crack the ecu which sucks You can't add horse power the puter won't reconise the mods so you spend all this cash for pipes ,air filter etc for nothing..Never again until they get dealers. Now I have simlar problems with KTM's I have to drive 6 hours to calif to get warranty work done.I do as much work myself or with a friend that is a certified Yam,Honda,Kawi tech.I got all the KTM tech dvd's that are the same one's the KTM tech's use for both my KTM's.My bro is getting pretty good on KTM's next I want to try the tune ecu I have all the cables I want to try this stuff out and see if I can get good.I will try it on my duke first.I found a map that has all my mods want to see if there is any differance with the akra map.I am hoping they have some stuff for the RC8 but I have not seen much.I really want to put both my KTM's on a dino and see what they read on the back wheel,Both bikes have lots of mods we shall see what the truth is.I am just afraid that the numberes will be down.Oh well I just have to know.If I can get it done I will try to post the results.
Well some more pictures just for u guys , i think Sd "R" looks cooler than Tuono V4 , but the new Tuono Looks grows on you , i was like some of you in the beginning

Here some diffrent ways ppl pimped their Tuonos
That first one is REALLY nice.

It's on the same level as Dan's redbull SD or Millar's Akro SD.

a few have said "i could learn to like it". i say why?... i wouldnt bother. i want a bike that does it all for me and the SD is one of those few that had it all. i loved the looks of the thing and then with the 07 it just got better!! i just could not wait to get my hands on one and i did! thats what it will have to take again to get me to trade up.

I don't mind the looks, mirrors off and it already looks better. Those examples posted look bang tidy at the front and I must admit I don't know what has been added or removed to make them look like that.

I certainly like the engine output, it would be nice to see a dyno curve with one to see how linear the delivery is -Freestyler?

My biggest drawback is I don't have a dealer I really trust near me for Aprillia, while I have a very good KTM / Ducati dealer I have known for years 20 miles away (5 mins from my office.)

This is the best photo of the Tuono! Where are the men in Black when you need them?

Image
hope to see the new tuono at "the great scottish bike show" later today ,but it probably wont be there

the old one was a great bike to ride , but i couldnt get over the fact that it looked like a crashed rsv ,no attempt to tidy it up at all ,and the gold one looked just awfull , a mate of mine had a superdream in that sort of colour scheme bitd

an rc8 might be in the garage soon tho
It's an Aprillia,in 6 months time it will either have killed it's battery or caught fire.
Who cares what you have! If you are on a motorbike you are already in my good books! Ride it like you stole it and grin from ear to ear! Most of all don't forget what this sub forum is called, as the SD is the epitome of it!

Everyone saw the Cycle World review? 153 RWHPs. 0-100 in 5.07. Quarter in 10.07/141. Maybe..... The Rc8 could stay with it?
it looks like the old tuonos did unfinished, sorry but I would not pay the asking price for a bike that is unfinshed, I have seen an rc8 with its bars and plastics removed look better finished, if I felt I needed somthing more that is the road I would take and end up with change in my pocket

Cool vid, but the Hockenheimring ain't what it used to be, which was epic (insanely?) fast. Except for that crazy Parabolica, no big throws on that course either. Would like to roll a moto on it someday, however.

And WTF is that crazy-ass flashing red light going all that damn time. That would drive me nuts.

And I really need to work on my wheelie-ing more. Still a wheelie school in LA?
That;s the video that convinced me that the Tuono deserved a closer look. Still looking. Can't wait to hear about your demo ride!
The worst I've read is: Hard saddle. Jerky low-speed throttle. So the transition should be smooth! But Lord--20 more HP's than Streetfighter/32 more than SDR (dyno/magazine proven)--and the chassis may separate it from the pack more than the power.... C'mon KTM: GET BUSY.

OK, who wants to go with me to give Galluzzi shit about how fugly the damn thing is? I can tell him in Spanish.

Odd - got the notice from Pro-I that he's going to be in town (not above link), and yet its not on their webs site's calender - .

Lights, looks, whatever.... DON'T..... Ride one extensively if you love your anything else. Throttle has front tyre skimming the road at 100. BIke disappears under you in corners--front grip is phenomenal/-50/50 weight distribution with rider. Best sounding power plant I ever heard. Electronics, slipper clutch, etc.

Thread started out as a question of power. Ride one. NO question will remain.

Awaiting the new SD but riding a yellow one till then.

The worst part with the Tuono is the crap fuel economy.

lol I read somewhere that the Tuono uses 9ltrs per 100ks

It'll go a 100 miles before light comes on--just did. And that included doing 152 MPH at one point (with plenty left up top!).

It's a phenomenal performing bike. Not perfect--but simply phenomenal. Engine + chassis. Love it.

I hope the SD 1290 can get my fingers pried off this thing--I really do. Big job ahead.....
New Cycleworld comparo says as much. No KTM included. Cause there really isn't one to Include.....
I still can't get past how fugly it is. The new 1290 SD might be a fugly fecker as well and if it is I won't be buying it. I just can't be riding an ugly bike simple as.

Ugly, tiny and not as fast as you would think. Surely I am not the only one who has met one of these on track?
I had a poke round one in the shop yesterday and really like it. I think it looks a good package. Little bit fragile in places, like the old one, but I'd definitely have one.

Still can't believe I've never seen one on track though. On paper anyway it looks like it'd be superb. I'd like to see some times from it on proper rubber and good rider on board.

I rode both the stock 2012 Tuono and 2012 RC8R (and SD for that matter...mine) back to back and I gotta say that Tuono is bloody fast...up top. Not much at all happening below 7000rpm.

Someone posted the Tuono has the same if not more than the SD below 7K and then owns it above that. This statement is only 1/2 true. The SD (mine anyway) in fact is substantially stronger from idle to 7K rpm...then the Tuono fooks off....litteraly.

The RC8R kills (and I mean kills) both bikes below 7K at which point the Tuono starts making serious juice. They both feel about the same from 7K to top. The SD will be a small spec in the mirrors of either bike....until the road turns tight and twisty that is. Then I'll have em both.

I wish KTM would just put the RC8R motor in a SD and call it good. I am concerned the increased displacement/rotational mass will make it turn in less quickly. It's almost unbelievable the difference it makes between my 250xcf and a 450 xcf.

The Superduke for me is better at one thing .. it is easyer to wheelie in lower speed . Tuono scare the shit out of me when getting cloose to the balance point

But im working on it .

By the way ..Tv4 has same power as an stock Sd to approx 7-8k ,very cloose infact . But as you all know that after that its bye bye bigtime .

And if you compair lowrance with your Sd.. i must ask is it stock ? if not you can compair with an Tv4 with Pv5 = almost 160 bhp and way more midrange torqe ... and its bye bye again
